"Shhh! You've gotta get it together or they'll hear us!"

"Okay I- oh my god! -okay I got this. Boost me up?"

Mikey grunted as he stooped to boost Pete up so his shorter friend could reach the bedroom window he'd left open.

"-gah! Careful dude I need my knees!"

Pete giggled as he pushed off of Mikey's bent leg and struggled to pull himself up and into the room.
It was well past midnight when they'd agreed to the plan, and Pete hadn't properly slept in days, rendering him in a state of near constant hysterics.

"I'm just about... OH!" Pete half-shouted as Mikey jumped and volley-ball boosted his butt to push him up and into the window.
He tumbled clumsily into his best friend's bedroom as Mikey called hoarsely from below, "Hey dipshit! Pull me up!"

Mikey shuffled around in the cold. A thin layer of fog was hovering above the ground as he waited for Pete to find their makeshift rope-ladder. He'd forgotten to put it out when he left.

What am I thinking sneaking Pete in? He's supposed to be with his grandparents, Dad's gonna flip when he finds him.
Mikey shivered as the dampness of the world settled into his bones.
On the other hand, I've got Pete forever until we get caught.
He felt a goofy grin spread across his face at the thought of having Pete around to spend his evenings with.

Whump.

Mikey jumped at the sound as Pete unfurled the makeshift ladder out of the window for him.
It was just an old extension cord he kept in his closet, but it was heavy-duty and made for a good rope to hold onto as he scaled the side of the house.

When he reached the window ledge Pete reached out to grab him under the arms, helping him clamber in. They collapsed onto the floor in a pile, panting and laughing at the feat they'd accomplished.

Pete and his mother had gone to stay with his grandmother for a while, and while they'd agreed to let him stay at Mikey's to attend school, Mikey hadn't even tried to ask his parents.
Instead he'd snuck out of the house at midnight and called a cab to go meet his best friend in the world and bring him home.

Mikey looked over at Pete who had laid down with his limbs spread out. He had his eyes closed and his face was calm, the dark bruises along the side of his face had begun to fade and were now a dull yellow-brown around the edges.

"What'cha doin?" Mikey whispered as he scooted over to sit next to him.

Pete responded without opening his eyes, "I love it here, it smells like you." He spoke softly, a slight smile playing at the corner of his lips.

Mikey drew his knees up to his chin. He was glad Pete felt safe here, it made him proud to know he loved being with him. He felt an odd flipping sensation in his stomach and blushed slightly.

Pete broke into a giant grin, "Is that weird to say? That's weird to say, nevermind man, just,.. thanks and junk."

It's not weird Pete, I love when you're here. I hate it here and you make it better. As long as you're safe and happy I'll do whatever it takes.

Mikey moved to kneel over his friend, Pete sensed the shadow fall across his face and opened his eyes.

"It's not weird. I love having you here dude, everything sucks without you. I wish you could stay forever." Mikey was glad for the darkness as it helped hide the redness in his cheeks.
