Gerard walked his cupcake back to the dayroom. He still wasn't allowed to be by himself, but didn't want to dawdle any longer in the cafeteria.
He nodded at the nurse on duty in the room and mumbled a greeting as he passed, making a beeline for one of the circular tables off to the side.
Frank, still trailing him as an angry shadow, peeled off in the other direction, opting to hunch in the holey red chair by the windows. He seemed to be refusing to look at Gerard, and huffed aggressively through his bangs as he stared out the window.
The fuck is his problem?
Gerard felt the hair on the back of his neck prickle in response to the hostility emanating from the smaller boy.
Whatever. He's made it very clear he's done with me."Wish we could all be done with you."
"Ooh the freak lost his freaky friend."
"—kill yourself already?" The voices were burbling away in the background, their constant derision picking away at the shreds of happiness Muriel's cupcake had brought him. He'd set it ceremoniously in the center of his table, and as the weight of the world pressed back in on him he let his head sink down onto the edge, bringing himself eye-level with the pastry.
Frank was just barely visible in the corner of his vision. He knew better than to turn his back on the kid by now, and the two made eye contact for an intense moment.
I'm sorry you're hurt Frankie but it really wasn't my fault. They took me away to solitary, I couldn't do anything about it!
"That's not what he's mad about dipshit." The new voice floated over his shoulder from the corner of the room. He could practically hear the eye-roll.
Gerard just stared more intensely at Frank, as if he could send his thoughts to the boy across the room just by sheer force of will.
The fuck is his problem then?
Frank broke off the eye contact, crossing his arms over his knees with another loud huff as he began picking stuffing out of the hole in his chair.
"He thinks you lied to him." The friendlier female voice explained.
But I didn't! I just—
"Yes you fucking did. You said you'd be there and you weren't."
"He's even lying about lying now..."
"—awful, hateful little fucker aren't you."
"What a useless human being."
"Absolute trash—"Okay, pretending for a second that that counts as a lie, it wasn't my fault. THEY took me away. What's his problem? Like, I didn't do it so how do I fix it?
"Do you even want to fix it?"
It was Gerard's turn to huff, sticking his lower lip out in a pout as the friendlier voice spoke the words he'd been afraid to approach.
I dunno...
I like Frank but he's sort of being a bitch lately."Wow, big words for a pansy."
"Creep can't even keep other creeps around."The newest, louder male voice overpowered the others, "Is it worth it?"
Is it worth it?
"Yeah. Is it worth the trouble. Is he worth all the fuckery and bullshit or is it something you're better off without?"
I... I don't know.
He'd been staring intently at his cupcake throughout this discussion, and chanced another glance over at Frank, lifting his head off the table slightly to get a better look at him.
Are you worth it Frankie?
I know I'm not worth anything to anyone, if the situation was flipped, I think I'd just hope you'd leave me alone and be better off without me.
