"What's your name?" A young blonde nurse demanded in a nasally voice without so much as looking at them.

"Uh, Michael Way, and this is Ray...?" Mikey glanced sideways at Ray, suddenly realizing he didn't know his last name.

"—Toro." Ray finished for him with a smile as he stepped up to the counter. "We're here to see Gerard Way."

Mikey hung back, he hated talking to strangers so he was more than happy to let Ray be the adult.

He surveyed the room as Ray answered the nurse's security questions and filled out a form.

It was an odd part of the hospital, the reception desk they were standing at was at the end of a long hallway full of brown painted doors with nondescript numbers on them. One of the overhead lights was out in the corner, lending shadows to the area, and a single worn leather bench was shoved almost as an afterthought against the wall next to the desk. A door with a flashing key-card access panel occupied the rest of the space. There were wires criss-crossing the glass panel of it, and trying to look through it twisted and distorted things in a way that made Mikey dizzy.

He saw Ray moving out of the corner of his eye, and rushed to catch up as the nurse buzzed them through the door.

Ray's eyes widened as they were led into the much smaller adjoining room. A man in a security uniform sat with his arms crossed in a chair by the door they entered through.

"Is this your first time here?" The nurse asked Ray softly.

He nodded, and Mikey mumbled "No." striding over to the lockers that occupied the wall and dumping the contents of his pockets into one of them. Ray stared with a look of confusion as Mikey began taking off his belt. Catching his eye he explained, "Can't take anything metal or sharp. Just like prison." To which the nurse paled and the security guard chuckled.

"It's— it's a safety issue!" She exclaimed, "To protect our patients and visitors we can't allow any potentially dangerous objects to enter the facility!"

Ray joined Mikey and added his change and keys to the pile in the bottom of the locker. "Okay, what else?" He asked the room. "Can I take my phone?"

The nurse shook her head. "No. Unfortunately cellphones aren't permitted. You'll also need to remove any metal jewellery or items from your person."

Mikey slapped his belt into the locker and turned to hand his glasses to the nurse. "Here. They had to inspect them last time. They're still not a weapon and yes I need them to see."

She turned the frames over in her hands, wiggling the arms before handing them back. She looked embarrassed to be checking them.

Once they were sufficiently safe, the nurse retreated to the front desk and the security guard rose from his chair with a grunt, leading them through another locked door and into the visitation room.

Mikey led the way to a duo of benches on the far side, checking over his shoulder to make sure Ray was still with him. The taller boy was clearly trying not to stare at anyone as he followed Mikey.

The guard crossed the room to hand a very large male nurse a slip of paper Mikey knew would send the man to fetch Gerard. He took a seat on one of the benches and motioned for Ray to join him.

"So... they're gonna bring him out or..?" Ray asked as he plunked himself down onto the bench opposite Mikey.

"Yeah, we aren't allowed in so they gotta bring him out." He kicked absentmindedly at the coffee table between them. "I think it's dumb."

"It's just safety. You have to understand that they don't want people hurting themselves in here."

"Or anybody else."
