Miley Way was texting in class.
He made a conscious effort to stare at the board, pencil in hand to keep up the appearance of taking notes as he tried his best to type blindly under the desk.
"What u mean?" He clicked send and shot a look across the room to Pete. They almost never got to sit together anymore, the teachers always said they were too distracting to each other.
Pete had his head propped up on his hand, and was absent-mindedly tapping his pencil against his lower lip. He didn't catch the look Mikey shot his way, but he did seem to notice his phone vibrating.
Mikey watched nervously as Pete tapped out a reply.
Oh hell, he's not even trying to hide it.
Pete had his phone out on top of his desk, poking away at it while the teacher had her back to him. He slid it back into his pocket moments before she turned to ask the class a question.
Mikey felt the buzz of a reply.
Damn, how does he always time that so perfectly?"Mom needs me home. 2 much 2 type. Tell u later."
Mikey rolled his eyes and shot Pete another look. This time he noticed and replied with a shrug, turning his attention back to the lesson.
Ugh. Peeeeeete why are you being weird!
He tried to tune back in to class, something about poetry? But his mind was occupied with other things. As the random circles he was drawing snaked their way across the page his train of thought followed.
Why do you have to go home? Is your mom okay? Are you in trouble? Did my parents somehow find out you were here and they told your mom and now we're both in trouble?
No Dad would've bitten my head off by now if he knew...
Are you just tired of me? Oh that's probably it, he's been here for like a week and now he's tired of me.Mikey let his gaze drift to the side of Pete's head as his thought wandered.
I hope he's okay... he's never not told me important things before... it's probably just a long story. Stop being so dramatic. If it was that important he would've found a way to tell me.
He was so lost in thought he didn't even hear the bell ring. It wasn't until the rest of the class stood up and blocked his view of Pete that he finally noticed it was time to move.
Pete was waiting for him just outside the door, and hurried alongside him as the two made a beeline for the parking lot.
"So why do you have to go home all of a sudden?" Mikey asked over his shoulder as they forced their way through the halls.
Behind him he heard Pete draw in a breathe before launching into a fast-forwarded explanation of events.
"Okay so my mom says I have to come home because he posted bail somehow so now he's out in the world and she's worried he's gonna try to do something to find her or something and she just wants me home and I tried to explain that I'm safe here but she wouldn't listen and—"
"Holy fuck man!" Mikey declared, pushing open the door and holding it for Pete to pass him. "Wait your step-dad made bail? That's insane why would they even let him out? He's dangerous!"
Pete shrugged and the two strolled side-by-side around the building as they continued their chat. "I don't know. I think it's stupid but whatever. He's out. I don't think he's dumb enough to come after her. She's just being paranoid, it's not like he's gonna kidnap me for ransom or something."
Mikey forced a laugh, he knew Pete was trying to make light of the situation to hide his actual concerns. "Can I go with you?"
"You... wanna come to my grandmothers?"
