The Future

It was a long drive because the south street was a long road, that led into the country. So, I had to leave town. I could spot the psych ward and it looked like an actual prison. I pulled up to the entrance and drove down the road to the doors. I parked my car in the spot closest to the door, and I took a breath, before getting out. I locked my car and when I climbed up the steps and entered the ward, it didn't look pleasant. It actually looked depressing and monotone. 

   " Can I help you? "

I looked towards the woman at the desk, and she also didn't look excited to be at work.

   ' Who would look excited? It's a psych ward filled with crazy people. '

   " I'm looking for my mother. My last name is L/n. "

   " She's down the left hall fifth door. "

   " Thanks. "

I left the desk and started walking to the left hall. I counted the doors and when I reached the fifth one, I looked through the small window on the door. Inside I could see my mother wearing a full white suit and sitting at a table. On the table was a chess set and she was just starring at it. I opened the door and walked in, but when I walked inside I spotted two doctors standing in the corners. 

   " Mom? "

The woman at the table slowly turned her head towards me, and she turned her head back to the chess set. I walked to one of the corners and talked to the doctor.

   " What's wrong with her? "

   " She's been unresponsive. Lately, she hasn't had the best sleep and when she does sleep it's for long hours. She's probably tired. "

   " Will she respond to me? "

   " I don't think so. You can try, and we'll be here if anything happens. "

   " Anything happens? Has she been violent before? "

   " When we wake her up for meals she's violent. "

   " Okay. . ."

I walked away from the doctor and towards the table. I sat across from my mother, and she didn't look up at me. When I looked down at the chessboard I could see that no pieces left their home base, and the board was set up as no one had played it.

   " Mom, I wanted to come and see you, and talk to you a little. "

   " . . . "

   " My friend, Bruno, and I are going to take care of some business at his house, and I want you to know that I love you. "

   " . . . "

   " I don't know what's going to happen, but I'll come to visit you again when it's over. And you'll get better, okay? I know you will. "

   " . . . "

My mother's head rose from the table and her eyes looked dead tired. Her eyes connected to mine, but then they went behind me. I turned around and looked behind me to see nothing but a wall. 

   " You know he's still here. "

I turned back to my mother and her eyes were still focused behind me at the wall.

   " Who? "

   " The demon in my dreams. He's not going to leave. You know that. "

   " Well, we've figured out a way, to get rid of him and-"

   " It won't be that easy. He can see your memories and he has control over everything. Even if you kill him, he'll always be there, somewhere in your mind. He's a dream after all. "

My mother looked back down at the table and starred at the chessboard. I got up from the table realizing that I wouldn't get anything else out of her. I thanked the doctors for letting me visit her and I left the psych ward. I jumped back in my car and started driving back to town and away from the creepy place. My mother's appearance stayed in my mind and It made me shiver.

   ' She's gotten thinner and I don't think I've ever seen anyone with so much baggage under their eyes. She looks horrible. '

I drove through the city and went back to Bruno's house. The sun was close to setting in the sky, and I knew that we would have to go to sleep soon. 

   ' What'll happen after all of this is over? I'm almost finished with my senior year, and Bruno will go back to fully working at the police station. Will Bruno and I still talk after this? Why am I thinking about talking with Bruno in the future? After this is all over everything will go back to normal, I'll finish school, and then I'll decide what happens next. '

All the thoughts of how this started invaded your mind. The thoughts about meeting Ji-Young for the first time, and Bruno came. You met Ji-Young after a car accident and Bruno was at the hospital when you woke up. Ever since then, Bruno has tried to be with you every step of the way when someone else was killed. Now, he's joining you to kill the man plaguing your dreams.

   ' Even though he's kidnapped me and done some weird stuff, he's had the right intentions. He was just worried I wasn't sleeping right and taking care of me. He's had the right intention, just the wrong idea. And he did cheer me up when Cindy passed. '

Oh, you wondered what life would be like once it was all over.
