Frustrations

Miles away from the training grounds, Itachi and his squad settled in a small community, a few miles from their mission site. Itachi had been assigned a mission to track a rogue ninja, who had been spreading terror and hate in every village he came across. The ninja, however, left no traces of himself behind. He was nicknamed the 'Dark Ninja' because he was covered in a black cloak from head to toe, no one ever saw his face.

There had been reports of the Dark Ninja in small communities throughout the Land of Fire, and once Itachi's squad as able to pinpoint a location, they left immediately. As they left, Itachi quickly wrote you a letter, hoping you weren't disappointed in him for leaving so abruptly.

The squad had found a small inn to stay in for the night. Itachi sat by the window, peering into the night sky, thinking about you. Thinking about how simple the interactions between you two had been, but the little, simple moments left the biggest impact. Your smile, the brush of your skin touching his, the kiss...

"Hey Cap'n! Now that you can't avoid me anymore, tell me about your date with Y/n! It's been days!" Shisui interrupted Itachi's thoughts. Itachi, not pleased about the interruption, gave Shisui a stone cold glare.

"Don't give me that look, moody. If you'd just told me sooner, I wouldn't be bothering you now." He gave Itachi a grin.

Itachi sighed, "Well, I listened to your advice. I took her to that spot beyond the village. My mom helped me cook the food though because I was too nervous and burned it all."

Shisui erupted in laughter, "No freaking way, that's hilarious! Tell me more!"

"We sat together and talked. It was really a peaceful date. I had never felt so happy like I did when I was sitting there with her. And then we, uh, kissed." He hadn't said out loud that he kissed you. His face felt like it was burning as he tried to hide his embarrassment.

His best friend knew better than to tease him right now. "You kissed her? I didn't tell you to do anything like that man! What happened?"

"I just let my heart guide me. It sounds lame and cliche, but I just followed by what my heart was telling me. It felt like it was speaking for the first time so I'd be a fool not to listen."

"That's great, but what now?" Shisui asked him.

"What now?" Itachi repeated. He tried to act clueless or surprised at Shisui's question, but it was one he didn't want to answer. Itachi was always thinking ahead, thinking of what his next step is. He'd thought about this situation too, but the steps ahead were too unknown, which made him feel uneasy.

"Yeah like, don't you want a relationship with her? We Uchiha may be incredibly strong and powerful with our chakra control and visual prowess, but our love is just as powerful. Once we fall in love, that's our partner forever. Rarely ever has anyone in our clan been in love with more than one person. Er, or so my mom says." He rubs the back of his neck in an attempt to hide the fact that he secretly obsessed over love. Unfortunately for him, Shisui was just a hopeless romantic.

"I do, but I don't think I'm in a position to give her the kind of relationship she deserves and needs." Itachi replied, a slight ting of pain and sadness stuck to his words. "I'm the future leader of the clan and the highest ranking Captain in the Special Forces. I was never given the luxury of free time or the freedom to do what I wanted, my father made sure of that."

"But doesn't Sasuke have a girlfriend? I think your dad has gotten soft over the years, maybe he's not the same asshole he used to be." Shisui's words were meant to be encouraging, but nothing helped Itachi's somber mood.

"Sasuke wasn't raised to be the head of the clan. He gets to live how he wants, while I live to please my father." Itachi slowly moves to his bed for the night. "I want her by my side forever, but I just don't know if it's possible. I'll have missions and duties that will take up all of my time. Even though in my heart she would be, but in real life, she wouldn't be my first priority." And with that, he sunk under the sheets, facing away from Shisui.
