What started as blissful sleep, soon turned into torment. No matter how safe and secure you felt in Itachi's arms, it didn't prevent any nightmares. Itachi knew of your nightmares, but had never experienced one firsthand, or really knew the depths of them. Until tonight.
He played with your hair as you fell asleep first, sleep taking him soon after. He felt you shake a little and mumble something under your breath, which woke him up, but he didn't think much of it. But then the shakes turned into jerks of your body and your breathing became more erratic.
Seeing you like this terrified Itachi. He tried waking you up, but whatever nightmare you were experiencing took over you completely, blocking out anything from the real world. After a minute of panicking, Itachi thought of something to try.
Itachi used a genjutsu on you, to see if he can see your dream. He had never tried this before, but the elders of the Uchiha clan said throughout their history, the Sharingan has been capable of many incredible things, some things that were even considered impossible. His goal was to enter your dream, and bring you back to your conscious self.
When he entered the dream, it was immediate chaos. It was a battlefield, but by the looks of the clothes of the shinobi fighting around him, it looked to be a battle from the past. He yelled out your name but he wasn't sure if you'd even be able to hear it. But soon enough, he heard yours.
Running through the battle taking place, he followed the sounds of your screams. You stood some distance away from the scene. Itachi watched as you screamed at a dark figure, trying to stop the figure from killing two shinobi. Her parents, Itachi realizes.
Eerily, as you ran to the dying figures of your parents, Itachi's attention was fixed on the dark figure. He could make out a smile and dark purple eyes. The figure seemed to actually acknowledge that Itachi was there, unlike you. The figure raised his hand as if to wave, and said, "We'll meet again, Itachi Uchiha."
At the sound of his name, Itachi threw shuriken at the figure, but they went right through him, of course. He felt an immediate sense of urgency to run after this figure and find out how they were manipulating your dreams. Itachi wanted answers for you, but hated himself for not having them.
He turned to find you, sitting on your knees where your parents had been. He slowly walked over to you, hearing only your sad sniffles and whimpers as you mourned your parents once again. Just as Itachi's hand was about to reach your shoulder, the dream morphed.
Although a battle continued around them, Itachi noticed the place at changed. This was definitely Konoha village, but from knowing all history of the village, Itachi didn't recognize this battle. Was it the future? Something that has yet come to pass?
Looking back down to where you were, Itachi realized you were gone. Cursing at himself for losing you, he ran around calling out to you. For someone who brought him so much happiness, it broke his heart knowing this is what you dreamt about.
Itachi recognized one figure after another; former academy students, genins, villagers. His breath hitched when he saw you talking to a figure on the ground. A boy, bloodied and beaten from battle. Sasuke. Itachi ran over in immediate panic, trying to piece together what he was seeing.
As he got close, he watched as you yelled at the open space around you. Attacks seemed to be aimed at your coming from no where. Itachi realized there was something you could see, but he could not. He watched as you struggled against an invisible attacker. Finally he reached you and turned you around to face him.
Your face met his with absolute terror. You flinched as Itachi held onto you, which made him feel confused.
"Y/n, it's me. You're okay. This is dream, okay? You need to wake up," he inched closer to her, and felt relieved as she didn't move away from him anymore.
"I-Itachi?" Your voice cracked under the realization that this Itachi wasn't part of your dream.
"Yes, I'm here." Itachi's arms wrapped you up, making the dream change yet again. This time, the dream world changed into soft colors, colors that reminded you of warmth and love.
"It's time to wake up, love" Itachi says, pulling himself from your dream. He held onto you as you started to wake up next to him. Tears filled your sleepy eyes.
"I'm tired of these nightmares," you choke out as Itachi holds you tight. "They're not normal. Why are they happening to me?"
"I don't know, love. I wish I-" Itachi stopped talking and immediately was out of bed and at the balcony door. He felt as if someone was standing there, watching the two of you.
"What is it?" you ask with concern.
Itachi didn't reply to you, instead he searched around the entire apartment and everywhere within eyesight of the balcony. His senses were never wrong. Someone had been there. But why?
Feeling unsatisfied with finding nothing, he sent out his crow to scout the area and keep watch on the balcony for the rest of the night. Itachi had a hard time accepting the fact that no one was there, but needed to comfort his terrified girlfriend.
"It's nothing," he replied, climbing back into bed with you.
He kisses your head, "Get some rest. I promise no more nightmares tonight, my love."
You giggle as you snuggle into Itachi, feeling glad he was here to help you. Itachi watched as a faint smile remained on your face as you fell back asleep.
However, your boyfriend wasn't going back to sleep anytime soon. His brain desperately tried to put the pieces of your dream together. What did your parents have to do with you? Who was the figure that killed them?
The Dark Ninja? Is that even possible? The only thing they have in common is that they're both a dark figure, so that's really a stretch. If so though, that's one piece of the puzzle, but it didn't answer any questions.
It also didn't account for the second part of the dream where you had fought an invisible attacker. Who would want to attack the village? Well, that list was probably really long, Itachi thought.
Itachi kept trying to solve what he saw in your dreams as you laid silently on his chest. As he looked at you, carving each of your beautiful features into his memory, he couldn't ignore the unsettling feeling he had. Something was going to take you away, or was at least trying to. Itachi needed to stop anything that wanted to harm you. You can't be taken away from him, he won't allow it.
The morning hours of the sun started to dance across the sky. Itachi convinced himself to at least get an hour or two of rest. Having a hard time shaking all of the toxic thoughts in his mind, he was shocked he found rest at all.
The days ahead weren't going to be easy, but he'd be damned if he wasn't going to be ready for them. Ready to protect those he loved. His family.
