Asking or Telling?

What the hell was that?!

Your mind was completely flustered as you walked back towards the village alone. Why did Kakashi pull that move on you? Maybe he flirted with you here and there, but it wasn't unusual behavior for him. He was always friendly with girls, he treated you no differently.

But today was definitely different. The air between you completely changed, and maybe it'll never be what it once was. You enjoyed Kakashi's mentoring and friendship, but if distance was what you two needed then that's that.

So lost in thought, you nearly didn't recognize a familiar figure standing towards the village gate. Itachi and another ninja stayed behind at the gate, checking everyone back into the village while the rest of the squad went on home.

Itachi saw you right away. He gave you a huge wave and yelled your name. Your feet moved before you could think, running fast towards Itachi. To your surprise, once you reached him, he scooped you up into a tight hug.

Shisui beside him was even surprised at Itachi's display of affection. During the mission, Itachi had made up his mind to make things work with you and asked for Shisui's advice night after night. After watching you two hug, Shisui felt happy, knowing his friend's feelings were reciprocated.

"Hey now lovebirds, you're blocking the gate." Shisui teased as you and Itachi pulled apart from your hug, smiling at each other. You missed him so much, and he missed you as well.

"See, I promised I would return" Itachi says confidently, his smile not wavering.

"I would probably kill you if you'd broken that promise." Itachi laughs at your response, knowing full well you would actually go searching for him if he hadn't returned.

As the two of you continued to talk, and even made dinner plans for the evening, Shisui happened to notice a solemn looking Kakashi come into view. He watched as Kakashi's full attention was on you.

The look on his face was enough to signal to Shisui what Kakashi was feeling at the moment. Oh god how he hoped nothing happened between you two, because he knew it would destroy Itachi. But from your reaction to seeing him, he wiped the idea from his mind.

Kakashi noticed Shisui staring at him intently. He started walking over and gave a friendly wave, trying to play off the sad feeling of jealousy in his gut.

"Glad to see you all returned from the mission" Kakashi spoke only to Shisui, and he noticed.

"Yeah, we didn't come face to face with the enemy. It was really too bad, I know Captain over there was itching to get the mission over with." Shisui kept his focus on you and Itachi, over in your own little world.

"I couldn't imagine Itachi Uchiha rushing a mission" Kakashi's words fell flat, not enoying being in this situation.

"It's the craziest thing, love. Makes people act in all sorts of ways."

The two men stood there for a little bit. They watched as you said your goodbyes to Itachi. Before you could walk away, Itachi had grabbed your hand and placed his two fingers on your forehead. You immediately blushed, knowing that move signified something special for him and you two were in front of people.

Kakashi and Shisui were both stunned. They knew what that symbolized, and how much it meant to Itachi. While Shisui was over the moon happy for Itachi, Kakashi continued to sink into despair. If he was going to put the effort into getting you, he definitely was going to have his work cut out for him.

But hey, you were more than worth it.

Itachi noticed the two men talking and joined the group. The giddy smile he had when he was talking to you was gone, but it still lingered under his forced frown.
