a/n: Happy August babes! It's my birthday month and officially the start of spooky season, so... Anyway, here's John's birthday chapter! It's a long one. (A long-ass filler, I guess?)
content warning: swearing, vulgar language, mentions of vomiting. oh, and sex that's insinuated, but no smut!
John ♡
I wrap my arm around Mars as she tucks her head into my shoulder. "You have a whole seat."
"Yeah, and it's your lap." I let out a breathy laugh at her response, looking out of the window.
It's a week before the Halloween dance, so the school loaded us in charter buses on this fine day after school to get our costumes and whatnot.
The bus is loud and filled with chatter, but Mars and I were listening to Paramore through my headphones so it wasn't so bad. "What do you want for your birthday?"
"Head." She smacks my arm. I grin, shrugging. "You don't have to get me anything, baby. It's fine. I don't make a big deal out of birthdays anyway."
"Well, what'd you do when you turned 16?"
The mention of my sixteenth birthday causes an unwanted memory to flash in my head. I didn't want to think about what happened on my birthday last year. It... was terrible. "Nothing."
"We can't do the same thing we do on an average day. It's your birthday! You really don't want anything?"
My mom. But, I can't say that. My mom's gone and she's not coming back. I just really miss her on my birthdays.
"Just you. And, to see my babies, but my dad isn't going to bring them. So, just you." She sighs. "Besides, we're spending the weekend at a bed and breakfast. That's enough."
"I'm a still get you something, okay?"
I kiss her forehead. "Fine."
She pokes her lips out, so I kiss them too. "I love you, Freckles."
I smile. I would never get tired of hearing her say that. "I love you more, Sunshine." Her cheeks flush and she ducks her head back into my neck.
"Ugh," someone groans. "They make me so sick."
I realize it's Eliza when I hear Alex respond, "Betsey, stop looking at them. They're not going to last past Thanksgiving anyway. Just let it run its course."
I roll my eyes. What Mars and I have is for life. "They're going to lose their shit when we get married, huh?" Mars murmurs, grinning.
"Oh, definitely."
We file out when the bus stops at the strip mall.
"Hey, hoes!" Maria yells, walking towards us from the other bus.
"Hey, Ria." We respond. I lace my fingers with my girl's as we meet up with Maria.
We'd started hanging out again a couple of weeks ago and everything has been cool. I don't know if we'll be as close as we once were, but it's a start.
Mars seems to like her a lot, so that was good. She didn't need to be with me all the time. She needed other friends. I want her to have other friends. But, with everyone being assholes, I don't think that'll happen anytime soon.
For now, though. It was just us and Maria.
"So, John, how does it feel to be fully healed?" Maria asks as she falls into step with us.
My doctor gave me the official all-clear a few days ago. I was free to do whatever the fuck I wanted - not like I stopped last month, but whatever. "Glorious."
