4 months later:
She walked down the hall, it was white, bright, with strong headlights running down it. There were boards up with different displays, all of different conditions and what not.
People pasted Arya, holding stethoscopes around their necks, others with clipboards over flowing with papers and reports in their arms, going into a nearby wards.
Her mum stood by Arya and they made their way to a set of doors. Her mum didn't hesitate to open them, but Arya did, watching the doors rebound as they shut slowly in front of her.
The ward was full, not many doctors around though, but no medical bed was empty. Arya didn't like it, there were never good memories here, why would anyone have good memories here?
Her mum searched as they passed openings, into different rooms with patients laying down, heads propped up, faces pale, the smell of putrid air lingered.
"Excuse me miss, are you looking for someone?" A lady dressed in blue came up to Arya and her mum. The lady's hair barely up in a clip, with most of it draped by her face. A tiredness crossed her eyes, seeping through her strained skin.
"Yes, I'm looking for my mum, Anne Stevensons" Aryas mums voice quivered, trying her best to speak without a crack, while holding her bag on her shoulder.
"Oh yes, she's the last one on the left" the nurse directed down the hall, her smile holding up strong. Both turned and made their way down, finding themselves at her bed.
Her nan lay weak, still and dreary. Her eyes could have been half open, shock filled the young girl's face, unsure to look away or to let her mind ingrain the sight that lay before her.
Arya's mum took a sharp inhale, blinking painfully. They walked to the old lady's side, gripping the bed railings tightly.
Some days before, her nan had taken a fall, she'd hit her head and severely injured her chest. She was thought to have been unconscious for some time before a friend found her lying on the floor. The ambulance was called and she'd been rushed to hospital. Many where aware that she could've died that evening, it's was all Arya could think about.
Sounds of a continuous heart-beat thudded in their ears. It was a somber atmosphere, her nan was with others around her age, most asleep and some barely awake.
"Mum?" Arya's mum studied her fragile face, the soft wrinkles crossing her face. Her hair was thin, swept awkwardly over her forehead.
"Mum, it's me and Arya" they sat by her for some hours, watching her eat her food and hear the occasional cough and splutter, each one sounding more painful than the last.
Doctors came and said she was showing signs of blood clots in her body, especially in the brain. They said it was to do with age and the fall was just the tip of it all. They seemed sympathetic but knowing there. Wasn't much they could do.
They sat silently, Arya watched her nan sleep, she couldn't bear the thought of life without her, she'd always been so close to her. The suddenness of it all was hard to take in and Arya found herself having to adjust very quickly.
"Arya darling, we are going now, we'll come back tomorrow" her mum spoke, her eyes glistened in the bright hospital lights. Arya just nodded.
—
School days passed, it seemed to repeat itself, like a never ending dream, not a nightmare but certainly not a nice dream.
Get up, go to school, going to the hospital for some hours, go home, have dinner, barely get any sleep... repeat.
Arya could feel herself begin to fall apart, She'd made up with Matt but he still continued to control everything she did and made sure where she was 24/7 and seeing her nan lay in the same hospital bed day in, day out was mentally exhausting.
She wanted to text Robin, hoping she'd get a reply but the backlash would be too great from Matt if he ever found out. Arya felt so alone, her mum always away at work or seeing her nan, her dad was at work a lot, it was a busy time of year. Her friends were there but they had limited contact, from fear of Matt and well...
Things weren't well and everything and everyone felt so alienated to Arya. Life wasn't what I used to be, nothing to look forward to, nothing to be happy about.
—
"Arya, I'm going to see nan, do you want to come?" Her mum called, she'd always been very good with her. Never forcing her to come to the hospital, she knew how horrible it was to see a family member in that state.
Arya knew she only had so long, making every effort to see her nan when she could, even if that meant hours in that torturous place.
—
They walked into the ward, it was busy that day, Arya dodged them, some crying, others holding back tears, some showing no emotions what so ever.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket, she closed her eyes right before seeing who the text was from.
-where are you, I'm at your house and no one is answering!-
Of course it was Matt, his impatience annoyed her so much. It wasn't like he didn't know about the situation she was in right now, he had no care in the world for anyone except himself.
She told him she was at the hospital and she wouldn't be able to speak to him for some time. He didn't reply after that.
"How are you nan?" Arya walked up to her nan. Her eyes watched as she sat by the side of the bed.
Her mum was talking to the doctor about something, which most likely wasn't good, it never was.
"I'm in a right state, aren't I?" Her voice was quiet, Arya barely heard the words of her nan.
Arya smiled away the pain, making the most of those precious moments.
"It'll be ok, don't worry-" Arya stopped, her nan placing her hand on her cheek.
"I know my time is limited..." Arya's eyes looked into hers," I've had a good life, I've been able to spent the last years of my life with my granddaughter and that was the best I could ever ask for...". Arya was practically sobbing at this point, she knew too well that it could be any day now. Unlike her nan, she didn't want to accept her fate, she didn't want to loose her nan, the person who had been kind and generous to her, all her life.
"But I don't want to loose you"
"Listen to me Arya, you won't ever loose me, I'll always be with you but remember this and don't you ever forget it... when times get tough and you feel helpless, it is always your choice, never let anyone tell you otherwise" her nan took her hand from Arya check, placing it on the bed.
This moment, her mum came over, her face wasn't hopeful. More bad news from the doctor. Arya couldn't listen to it, instead she repeated what her nan had told her, over and over.
"Never let anyone tell you otherwise"...
Ooh it's getting serious now, hello everyone hope you enjoyed the next chapter. What do you think is going to happen next? Hopefully it will end up all ok, I'll see you in the next one <3
