The crickets creaked out their serenade by my ears as I lie in the grass, alone, my eyes closed against the gentle drip of a light rain born of a dark sky, closing over the sun.
Water slid down the side of my face, running through my slick sideburns and joining its comrades at the rippling mud puddles hidden between the tall, swaying blades of grass tickling my arms, my calves.
It was loud enough that it drowned out the restless nagging of the future and the pitiful wails of the past, but so quiet that I could hear my own heartbeat against the swish of grass gently stroking my tunic.
I was alone, yes, but not lonely. I could never be lonely with such a vast world beneath my skin, singing its lullaby softly to my weary soul.
I made my peace with the world in that silent moment, the rain cool on my face like a cleansing shower, the music box of water drizzling into puddles like stars, making the world come alive with quiet droplets.
I'd always thought that I needed to keep moving, to aim higher and higher, escape the harsh ground of reality waiting for me underneath my feet, traversing between the clouds.
I was laying on said ground now. I was no knight, no Princess's bodyguard. I didn't even know where she was right now. I wasn't even a soldier anymore at this moment. I was just a random someone slowly getting wetter and wetter in the light but insistent rain.
I was surprised by the peace it gave me.
I'd always looked down upon such indulgent relaxation. It looked as though even I needed this once in a while.
I sighed into the rapidly darkening sky, opening my eyes to gaze upwards at the rolling clouds. The musky scent of the earth enveloped my body, took me in its arms like a mother would a son.
All thoughts banished from my freely dreaming mind. All worries discarded from my loose shoulders.
It was quiet that day. All the words I couldn't say were already spoken in the pitter of rain, the exhale of the leaves, the whisper of the winds.
I let it take me.
A/N: A ton of dialogue in the last chapter (or, you know, whatever you call it), absolutely no dialogue in this one. I like it.
Tell me what you think so far! See y'all.
