20. The truth

Ben's POV

I could see in Jen's face how terrified she was after finding out the news about Alex, I'm scared too, I don't want him to hurt Jen again or mess anything up in our relationship.

Weeks passed and there was no news about Alex, but I still think every day where could he be and what's going to be his next move.

Now Jen's at work, and anytime Jen's not at home I get nervous, I want her to be safe but she's been trying to show me she's okay on her own and that she can handle this, but I still get worried when she arrives a later than usual and little things like that.

I was thinking about all of this until Max came into the room and get me out of my thoughts.

Max: Hey Ben.

Ben: Hi Max, what's up?

Max: I have to talk to you about something.

Ben: Everything okay?

Max: It's about Alex. He told me why he agreed to work with Beau, but nobody knows about this because I promised I wouldn't tell anybody.

Ben: When did he tell you that?

Max: Some moments before the police and my mom found me.

Ben: And...what is the truth then?

Max: A month after the accident, Beau contacted Alex and told him that if he didn't do what he told him, he would kill my mom and made him agree to work for him and then Beau told Alex what was his plan, but he couldn't say no or else, my mom was going to die so he didn't have any other choice but to do what Beau told him to.

Ben: But, Jen said that Alex told her that he didn't like being in a relationship with her after that accident...is that part true?

Max: I don't know, that's all he told me because then Beau caught us and after that, the police arrived.

Ben: So, that means Alex was forced to help Beau, which means that he shouldn't be in jail...Why didn't you say something before?

Max: Because I couldn't, and I shouldn't have told you but, now that he's out there, I think that you should know. But please don't tell my mom, she can't know, Alex didn't want my mom to know because he doesn't want to cause more trouble and he said that she deserved someone with who she would be safe.

Ben: I don't know, it's complicated but, maybe you're right, we don't want her to worry about anything else right?

Max: Exactly.

I can't believe what Max just told me, this makes me think about Jen and me a lot, what if Alex is the right one? The man that she wants by her side?

Alex sacrificed everything to save Jen's life, his whole reputation was ruined by this whole scandal and it was all because of a freakin' blackmail.

But on the other hand, Alex helped Beau kidnap Jen's son and that's just... terrible, he didn't want to do it but he did, and he couldn't say no.

I'm not sure if I want Jen to find out about this, I don't want her to even consider the possibility of dumping me for Alex because of this, I want her to be with me, I want her to be always mine.

Jen's POV

I just got home and Ben and Max were talking, I love to see Ben hanging out with my kids, it feels like we're already a family.

Of course, when Ben saw me, he started asking me tons of questions, wondering if I was okay, if anything weird happened, that kind of stuff. He has been protective since Alex escaped from jail and even if I try to calm him down, I just can't.

Now Ben has to leave for a meeting and all the kids are at school, which means I'm going to be home alone, I would usually get excited about this kind of things but, I can't be calm knowing that I'm going to be alone at my house and Alex can show up here with no warning.

After some hours of relaxing and watching Netflix, I heard a knock on the door, without thinking who could be I just opened and Alex stormed into the house without even letting me say anything.

Jen: A-Alex, what are you doing here?

Alex: I want you back Jennifer, I can't do this anymore.

Jen: Do what?

Alex: Lying to you, I lied, I didn't tell you the real reason why I betrayed you.

Jen: What are you talking about?

Alex: I-I did what I did because Beau blackmailed me into doing it. If I didn't agree to work for him he was going to kill you...and I, I just can't accept the fact of losing you and, after I agreed to help him...he told me about his plan of kidnapping Max and I couldn't say no...not even if I wanted to.

Jen: I don't understand. You told me you didn't like dating me after the accident.

Alex: It was a lie, I loved you back then, and I still love you now, I know you're dating Ben but, please give me a chance to prove to you that everything I did was to help you...to save you. I hate myself for what I did, that's also why I didn't tell you anything, I had to accept my fate and let you go. I want you to be happy Jennifer, I want you to accomplish everything you want in life, I want you to find someone with who you will spend the rest of your life...and at first, I wanted you to find somebody else with who you would feel safe with, but then when I found out that you were dating Ben my heart break into a million pieces and I realized that person could be me, I know what I did was enough reason for you to hate me but, I don't want to lose you, Jen, I miss you, I miss your touch, your voice, your laugh, your smile, I miss what it was living with you, and I don't think there's life for me without you.

Alex left me speechless, everything he said...I know he meant every word, I could see it in his eyes but, Ben...I love Ben and I want to be with him, and I know he wouldn't lie or betray me as Alex did, Alex hurt me and my kids but still...
