I walk briskly into the kitchen flinging together a plate for Zero with the premade food that sat on the island. When I finish I slide the plate to him and go sit on the couch.

I sit there with my head in my hands trying to erase that embarrassment from my memory.

"T, what were you guys doing in there." Zero says with a mouth full of food and his plate in his hands.

"You don't know what your talking about. We- we were. You just woke up so your eyes were adjusting, now go finish eating." I say shooing him back to the kitchen.

I shrink back into the couch and hide my face in the palm of my hands until I hear the creaking of the steps. Don comes and sits on the couch opposite from me, He slouches back and picks up the remote.

I have a pit in my stomach; this feels kind of awkward like what possessed him to do that? Should I say something?

"So.. that, what exactly was. THAT?" I say getting up and sitting at the far end of the couch he was on.

"Honestly I've always liked you and I did some hard thinking about yesterday and how life can change in an instant. So I decided why wait until it's too late to make a move." His eyes never leave the television.

But he's right.

Zero then comes and sits between us.

"So what are we watching guys!" He says wrapping his arms around us both.

I thump him in the back of the head.

We watched shows and talked until Don's mother came home from work. Opening the door she hurried in to check her appearance in the mirror. Not long after a knock at the door startled each and every one of us. We all instinctively knew who it was.

She takes a deep breath before opening the door and talking to the police for a couple minutes then inviting them in to sit on the couch.

"Zeirus, Donnie why don't we go sit in the back." Zero jumps up and takes Mrs. Madison by the hand and Don not far behind.

Leaving me left with the two police officers all alone.

"So Taleaz, you are aware your mother was hospitalized yesterday correct?" One officer says getting his notepad out.

"Um yes sir."

"Well she claims that you pushed her in an attempt to make her fall and purposely injure and or kill herself."

"What? No. She was going to hit my brother so I pushed her to get her away from him but she just so happened to fall and hit her head on the edge of the table."

I can't believe she told the police I was trying to kill her. If anything she was killing herself, doing more damage than I could ever do.

"The neighbor that assisted, Nancy- Nancy Johnson says you tried to flee the scene leaving your mom to and I quote "to choke on her own blood and die".

I have to stop myself from laughing at that one, I didn't know what they said in school was accurate about drugs eating your brain but I guess they really do.

"Um, no sir. I was running because I knew once she came to, something like this would happen."

"Well she wanted to press charges for simple assault but fortunately for you since she was already under the influence of heavy narcotics and the state of your living conditions. She'll go to trial for the custody of you and your brother."

My heart leap out my chest as he said that, I don't know whether to be happy or scared. Where will we go if not with her?

We talk a bit and wrap it up, I follow them to the door and wave them off.

I already know I'm going to go through hell and back over these next few weeks.
