Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful

The sun was still sleeping, streets enveloped in a greyish ombre as I walk into the thick snow. In not more than a minute, I reached my destination and walked out of the car, the cold wind brushing past my face in a gentle embrace.

I stepped into the local bakery shop that my mother owned, Mother's baked goods, then enter the store with a bag full of brown and white sugar as well as some bottles of chocolate chips and sprinkles. We were out of those things and so I, the darling daughter of Aline, offered to buy her needed groceries.

I placed the bag of sugars and toppings in the kitchen which is in a contradictory mix of messy and clean. Pots and baking pans were seen being cluttered into the other side of the sink while batches of freshly baked croissants were being pumped inside with chocolate mousse.

I greeted Giselle, the thirty-one-year-old woman who works here as my mother's baker. She was neatly dressed and her wild afro hair was kept tidy with her hairnet.

"Hiy'a doing dear" her freckles bloomed adoringly at her face.

"I'm doing fine Giselle but you know what's finer?" She cocks her brows with a knowing smirk on her face and I continued. "The croissants you're making"

She chortled and mother popped her head out of the door with a curious look on her face while the two of us are cackling in laughter.

After arranging the things I bought in the grocery store, I turn the water on and washed the dishes. The cold water hit my already cold skin and I slight hissed at the contact.

"Oh thank you darling" Mom went inside the kitchen after arranging the newly baked donuts and tapped my back.

"No problem ma" I winked at her and wiped my hands with toilet paper after finishing the dishes.

Mom's two other employees came here and greeted me with a smile before I kissed mom goodbye. The sun was already awake, its golden magnificent rays filled the rich blue sky and warmed my face.

Christmas is just one day away, every place you see was touched with the Christmas spirit making you basked in its festive excitement. Employees dressed as elves and probably a dude wearing a Santa Claus suit was seen in every store especially at malls and toy stores.

Homes we're decorated with ornamentals and a big old Christmas tree, Christmas songs have been sung repeatedly into the radio and families were already making plans to making their days extra special.

As I got home, my phone buzzed and it was Everlyn asking for a video call which I easily accepted.

"Merry Christmas Selene!" She was dressed in all red, it was great on her olive skin, and a smile hung upon her lips.

"Merry Christmas Everlyn"

"I miss you! Don't worry there's only one more week and I'll be home soon! I have a lot of gifts for you, I bet you'll be surprised" I remember her gifting me an erotica novel and it was like a hot potato in my hand, now, that novel was located in the very corner of my library and filled with dust.

"I don't want to be surprised Everlyn but I appreciate your effort" I said in a deadpan voice whilst she giggled and continued her gossip about how one of her distant cousins got herself into a fight with one of their cousins because of a guy who two-timed them.

We continued chatting for a good forty minutes before I was interrupted by a knock on the door. Mom and dad were still out from work while George, well, he's with his so-called friends after begging his mother to let him out due to Christmas.

"Oh, didn't know you have a visitor Selene" I heard the teasing tone coming from Everlyn and I shushed her.

"I don't think I invited anyone" I furrowed my brows, I never invited anyone, even my classmates and the only exception is when we have a group or partner project.

"Oh shit, don't open the door! Maybe that's a serial killer!" Everlyn screamed from the other side. It was nonsense, there are not many people in this town and nothing is interesting here.

Even the town's prison cell wasn't used much, only a handful of people who do shoplifting and fighting with someone were the main factors that lead them to jail.

"That's ridiculous" I answered her later and went to the door, I suddenly began to feel nervous and I cursed Everlyn for making me think about serial killers and whatnot.

"Just ask them!" She half-shout half-whisper in the call and I nodded. She's right, it's better to be cautious than to let yourself be a victim of being careless.

I walked to the door and a sigh of relief washed over me when I saw it was locked, great. If it was a serial killer then I still have time to run to the stairs and call 911.

"Who is it?"

The knocking stopped and my heart was gripped in tension before I heard a familiar voice, so familiar it burned my ears.

"It's me"
