"They can't bloody do that!" Mya cried as I folded my hands around the cup of tea she'd given me. Luke smiled ruefully from across the table, mirroring my movements and cradling his mug close too.
"They said he's been on good behaviour for the entire time there and he gets to be out on parole."
We'd gone to Mya almost straight after Luke and I's conversation because it was only fair that she got to understand what was happening too. She didn't know the whole story, nor did she know the aftermath of it. She just knew that my dad was an abusive asshole and that he went to jail for it.
I let my gaze wander around Mya's kitchen, realising it hadn't changed in all those years that I'd known her. We weren't one of those duo's of best friends that hit of perfectly well right from the start. In fact, we pretty much hated each other. Mya hated the popular crowd and I, well, I was friends with Maddison, bloody hell.
Big, big, big mistake. Like all the others in our group, I was a perfect cheerleader, blond ponytail, pompons and all shit. But then the beatings started and I had to wear long sleeves to hide the cuts. Bags were beneath my eyes because of insomnia and looking good was not my first priority anymore. Keeping myself safe was.
I quit cheerleading and started to take self defense lessons. Within no time, I was out of the popular crowd. I wasn't yet at the bottom of the piramid, but I was falling. When dad was arrested and mum left, and then my reputation really started crumbling beneath my feet and yet the rumours about me were rising. I turned into the goth rock chick with the black clothes and dyed hair, whispers going round about drugs and cuts.
I really thought Maddison would support me through everything, be my friend during it all, but I was wrong. As soon as I left the squad, a switch turned and the bullying started, and my hate grew.
I found a perfect ally in Mya though, the girl who hated Maddison with whole her heart. It took a while for me to really trust her with everything that had happened, but I wouldn't wish for any other best friend now.
I didn't really know why I was so upset about this all now either. I was tougher now. I'd been through hell and back, I'd fought my way through several hard and dangerous situations and yet even the idea of my father walking the streets had me running the hills. Memories of that kind never just simply go away, the leave an mark on your soul and an imprint on who you are. My father was the start and the worst of my demons and even though I might never see him again, I somehow still had to fight him mentally every day.
Luke had thrown some eggs in a pan during my monologue of thoughts and I smiled as the smell of eggs and bacon filled the kitchen. Mya was looking at me with a slight frown on her face. "And what now?"
"I'll be staying with Cain and his boyfriend for a week or so, get away from the mess that's happening here."
Luke frowned and casted a look over his shoulder. "Who's Cain?"
I went to take another sip of my tea only to find my mug empty. Standing to reheat some water, I said, "Cain was a real good friend of mine before and during everything that happened, but he finished his senior year and was accepted at a university in Florida."
He gave a small nod in return. "As long as you're safe."
Mya dropped me and Luke off at the airport. We had picked up some stuff at home and Luke was coming with me into the airport as far as he could. She gave us a weirded look when Luke said he would catch a bus and that she wouldn't have to wait, but said goodbye and drove back home.
Luke smiled at me as they scanned my printed e-ticket to Florida. As we were waiting for the plane to be ready and then moment I'd have to pass through customs, he asked, "Let me know when you get there yeah?"
