When we're being graded on
Our ability to write well
We must wonder
"Who's judging"?
Book publishers
Story editors
College professors
Or the business Joe
Certain prompts are
Like petitions
Ignored repetition
We judge a fish to see
If he'd fly
As well as a bird
Born in the sky
Where education matters
We only have standards
Setting us out to fail
Because where we think
We can only get higher
We don't realize how low
We can sink
We become below
Below what's needed
To have considered succeeded
Let's keep our eyes open for failure
At this rate,
None shall shine through
You may be a star on field
Or with many tools
But never bright in a
K-12 school
You may be a book nerd
Just like me
Hoping to be a nerd
In the "right" things
But that's what no one sees
If you can analyze Shakespeare
But can't add two plus two
What good are you?
If you can solve a mystery
But are failing history
What good are you?
If you can understand feelings
But are lousy at reading
What good are you?
You can't be a poet or a professor in literacy
You can't be a cop or in a detective agency
You can't be a counselor
in psychology
Because we are all
