In light of recent shootings, I wrote this poem. Yes, it's biased. Yes, it's a sensitive topic. So please, if either of that is not something you are comfortable with, do not read. It's not a topic I want to debate nor do I want to trigger any painful memories, so please take severe caution with this.
How many lives would it take
Tears, loss, and pain
To make the world
A little good again
Do you hear it?
Someone's screaming
They're begging and pleading
Do you see it?
Someone's bleeding
The air, their life
It's leaving
Hundreds of thousands
Lives are ending
But there is money in someone's pocket
Power in their palm
Their darkest secrets
Stay out of harm
But the lives of others
Their happiness and peace
Torn to shreds for a little green
Or a little insanity
Do you feel better when you
Take your hate
Decide another's fate
Ruin their lives just to have your say
Your words have become actions
And these actions are ending the world
Is it an exaggeration?
A phrasing riddled with hyperbole?
Guess you wouldn't really know
Until the world ended for real
When it lays in your arms
Or on the floor
When the words or things they could've said and done
Are things that remain unknown
So yeah, keep your guns
Multiple rounds hidden away
It's your second amendment right
How dare we take that away
And when another crazy person
Decides they wanna play
I wonder if your guns
Could really save the day?I'm not actually in support of "taking away guns", I would just prefer if it were better regulated and controlled. In the past 20 Years, 344 people in the United States were killed in mass shootings, many of whom were children, teenagers, and young adults. This does not include other shootings, i.e gang-related or "simple" murder. This does not include the many who were injured and definitely does not account for the pain and grief suffered by their loved ones.
Another fact is that people who own guns are more likely to die or have a death occur by gun, particularly in a situation of home invasion. I'm not here to change your mind but I want you to know how I feel and why I feel this way. If you feel otherwise, I respect that but do understand, this unlike other topics, is not one I'm willing to discuss at this moment. Many people were killed recently by a school shooting, majority of whom are younger than myself, and I am not okay.
