A P R I L
Here she is.
'Here I am.'
Suzume's first day in Hyogo, her first time ever living in a home by herself. It was a two-bedroom place so that her mother, or brother could come and stay whenever they wanted too.
"Are you sure you have everything sweetie!"
"Yes, mom for the millionth time!" The brunette laughed as she was pulled into a tight hug by her mother for the nth time that day.
"Oh, give me a break Suzu! You're my daughter! I'm allowed to hound you!" Her mother growled but all Suzume could do was laugh.
Suzume's mother was upset with her decision to leave, but she didn't hold her back. She knew what had happened at Shiratorizawa, almost ripped the coaches head off. She understood how important volleyball was to her daughter, to both of her children and she would never hold them back.
"I'm going to miss you mom." She said, a hint of sadness laced in her voice as she realised she would be hours away from her family for the first time in her life.
"I- I'm going to miss you too my baby!" Her mother began sobbing and she had to bite her lip to stop herself. She pulled away and kissed her mother on the cheek before turning to her brother.
She reminded herself this was a good thing, a happy thing. She was going to be attending Inarizaki High School, a school known for their well-established volleyball team.
"Nii-chan, I'm going to miss you too." The dark haired girl said as she walked over to the stoic boy and wrapped her arms around his torso. He soon returned the gesture, the smallest smile gracing his face as he bid farewell to his beloved sister.
"We'll see each other soon." He said in his normal serious voice, and she had to stop herself from laughing at how terrible he was with his feelings. She knew he was going to miss her, he was secretly a big softy after all.
"Make sure you make it to nationals." He added and she smiled.
"You know it."
With that, she bid farewell to her family, and tried to settle into her new home. She collapsed on her bed, the excitement starting to get to her as she realised how amazing this opportunity was.
'I'm going to have a new team, new friends!' She was beyond excited.
It's not that she didn't love her old team, because she did, she still loves and cherishes them with everything she has however she can't be with them anymore, she had to keep moving forward and looking up.
She was never going to be content to just settle, hence what led her to this moment, to this school.
'I am going to win nationals this year.'
Suzume had started getting hungry and being the silly girl that she is, she had forgotten to bring food to her new apartment.
She decided to make her way down to the local convenience store, she was wrapped up in a big jumper and light scarf, the spring air a little colder than usual. Although she did have a tendency to almost always be cold.
She looked over the shelves buying ingredients to make simple meals, together with some 2 minute ramen and other snacks she enjoyed (of course she just had to get some strawberry mochi).
After she purchased her items, she smiled cheerily at the cashier before heading towards the door.
"I have the right amount of change, just give me a second, would you?" She turned around to see a tall dark-haired boy with a bored expression feeling his pockets for this 'change'.
"Stop wasting our time! We're all trying to purchase our things here!"
"Yeah, yeah just give me a sec-"
"Here." she said walking over to the tall boy and handed him the amount of change he needed. He looked from her hand to her face and eyed her sceptically, but she raised her eyebrows in an effort to say, 'Just take the damn coins already!'
The boy took the coins, nodding to her slightly as thanks before handing it to the cashier and taking his jelly fruit sticks.
Before the boy could properly thank her for her kindness, she had already left the store.
He hastily (for him) walked out of the store looking left and right when he spotted her walking not too far from him. With his usual deadpanned expression, he called out to the girl and made his way over to catch up.
"Hey, wait up."
Suzume stopped in her tracks and turned to see the green eye boy, a smile gracing her face that made him want to smile also, but he didn't.
"What's up?" She asked casually as he fell into step beside her.
"Thanks for helping me out. Here." He reached into his pocket to hand her his change but she shook her head.
"It's fine, you don't need to pay me back. It wasn't that much." She laughed. It honestly didn't faze her; she wasn't a person who had the mentality of 'I-did-something-for-you-and-now-you-owe-me-big-time'.
"Are you sure? I kind of feel bad." His bored expression had her confused, his words said one thing but his face, another. It amused her.
"Don't worry about it. Anyway, I couldn't help but notice your jacket. Do you go to Inarizaki too?"
"Yeah, I do- wait too? You go to Inarizaki? I haven't seen you around before. Are you going to be a first year?" Suna couldn't help feeling a little giddy knowing that he would definitely be seeing her again.
"No, I'm a second actually. My first day will be tomorrow." She announced, even though it was going to be everyone's 'first day' tomorrow.
"Hmm, looks like were both second years."
"That's cool. Not to mention we both play volleyball." She knew he played volleyball because it too was printed on his jacket.
"You play volleyball?" Suna asked, a slight sense of excitement in his words that you'd miss if you didn't know him well.
"Yeah, I'm an opposite hitter." She motioned her left arm as if she were spiking a ball and then turned to the boy, analysing him while he raised a brow at her.
"Middle blocker?" She asked slowly and the green-eyed boy raised his brows. The most expressive he had been so far.
"Yeah, actually."
"Maybe we can play together sometime?" Suzume suggested, a wide smile on her face. The boy's insides warmed at the girl's words.
"I would like that."
Suzume loved to play with anyone and everyone who played volleyball, the more challenging the better. She was just determined to have fun and become the best she could be.
"By the way I'm Suzume, it's nice to meet you." She bowed her head slightly at him.
"I'm Suna Rintaro, likewise. Is Suzume your last name?"
"First." She noticed again that the boy looked at her questioningly and she couldn't help but laugh.
"You can call me by it, I don't mind." She said and Suna looked away, the smallest microscopic smile gracing his lips.
"Okay."
After about an hour the two finally parted after exchanging phone numbers and talking about their favourite snacks. The two already felt like close friends and the dark-haired girl was beginning to get excited for the year ahead.
When she got home, she decided to set to herself for a bit before exhaustion took over and she fell asleep, dreaming about meeting her new team.
