At this point, it had almost become a tradition. Every single year on winter, just before everyone left Hogwarts for the Christmas holidays the Gryffindor students of the class of 1978 played Truth or Dare. It was -more or less- a Christmas celebration, a way to say goodbye to their friends and family inside Hogwarts for two weeks.

Of course not everyone was happy about that tradition. Not at first at least. Some, like Lily Evans or Remus Lupin found the idea absolutely stupid. Of course they still played for the sake of their friends, people like Marlene McKinnon or Sirius Black who liked nothing less than being given  a chance to prove their bravery (or have a good snog when they were old enough). There were other people like Alice Fortescue or Frank Longbottom who played the game in hopes of being dared to kiss their long-term crush (something that quite mysteriously happened a lot). And then there was James Potter who was a mix of all of them.

No matter what they thought of the game though, no-one ever really thought to skip the game even one time. Besides the complaints like: "Come on Sirius this game is absolutely stupid" or "Marlene! Please can't we just stop this tradition?" which were not a rare occurrence, in the end everyone sat their butts down and joined the game.

The game itself was not the only custom that the young Gryffindors had though. In the end, it was more like a habit, something that every year was the same and no-one expected it to have a different ending one day. By "it" I mean no other than the dare that Sirius Black dared Lily Evans to do every year since third year: to kiss James Potter. Every year her answer was the same: Taking a shot of whatever drink the Marauders had nicked for the game.

So naturally, when seventh year came everyone expected her to have a shot. What they didn't expect was to see her hesitate for a mere few seconds before her hand moved towards the glass. And what they definitely didn't expect was James Potter taking a shot before she could and then shooting a small smile at her. And what they absolutely did NOT expect was the flash of disappointment and hurt in her eyes that stayed there for a second.

Truth was, not everyone noticed all those little things (apart from JP taking a shot, that was quite shocking). However, anyone observative enough (in other words Remus Lupin, Alice Fortescue and Dorcas Meadowes) would notice the subtle but quite curious change in both of their attitudes.

A week after this last game of T or D Lily Evans and James Potter were sitting in the common room together, practicing a particularly difficult spell in Transfiguration. They were trying to transfigure cherries into small, dark red birds.

"I quit. This is impossible."

James lifted his eyes from the transfiguration book he was holding and looked at her. She had a hand in her hair and her eyes were closed out of frustration and tiredness. "Lils you know you can't quit, transfiguration is one of the most important classes if you want to become an auror."

She opened her eyes to look at him and only then did he see the full range of her exhaustion. It scared him. "I know but... It's just so damn frustrating! How the hell do you manage to be top of this class?"

He shrugged. "Just as you manage to be top of the class in Potions. Honestly, that class is too bloody complicated for my poor brain." She gave him a small, strained smile. He sighed. "Look how about we take a small break? If you keep up like this, you're gonna pass out. How many hours did you sleep last night?". She seemed ready to object but then she thought better of it. She sighed as well. "Around five if you don't count all the times I had to wake up because of Mary snoring... I guess you're right we deserve a break."

"Great!" He threw his book away, not really caring about where it landed and got more comfortable on the couch they shared, putting his legs on her lap. He rolled his eyes at her disapproving look. "Relax a bit Evans, we're the heads of the school no-one's gonna care". She sighed for the second time this afternoon and got more comfortable too. He grinned at her and grabbed a few cherries from those which they were supposed to transform. "I want to see if I can tie these two cherries in a knot with my mouth. They say that you can only do that if you're a good kisser." He told her, smirking. She rolled her eyes and replied: "Well then Potter I'm afraid you're not gonna be able to do it."

"Are you implying I'm a bad kisser Evans?" He asked with a mock hurt expression. The purposely innocent look on her face was descriptive enough. "Well I'm just saying I'm not sure you fulfill all the requirements to be a good kisser." His expression shifted to half-serious, half-challenging. "Would you mind showing me which ones would those be?".

For a second her eyes widened in surprise and after a millisecond of hesitation, she leaned forward and stopped her face an inch away from his. "As you wish". Then she grabbed him from the hem of his blouse and firmly pressed her lips to his.

Later that afternoon after a lot of heartfelt conversations and a decent amount of snogging James Potter had one thought on his mind: Lily Evans was definitely able to tie two cherries together with her mouth.
