Owlpaw followed the scent of a vole Keeping her pawsteps light and silent, she noticed the brown creature grooming itself. Owlpaw stalked forward, keeping herself low and eyes glued on the prey. She leapt feeling her claws sink into the creatures flesh, nipping the back of its neck.
She and her friends have been in training less than two moons. Today she was having a hunting assessment, she had expected for Driftstorm to come out of hiding, praising the apprentice. Owlpaw lifted the nose sniffing the air, she could scent Wasppaw close. She quickly covered her prey with earth, carrying on, continuing to look out for prey. Owlpaw turned her head quickly to the sound of a chatter of a squirrel.
She found the red creature eating at a spruce cone. He checked to see which way the wind was going. She lowered her self, gazed glued to squirrel as she maneuvered around it. She crept forward, she hunched up her shoulders, however something startled it. A blue-gray pelt dashed swiftly out at it, but the squirrel was quicker, fleeing up a tree, away from the hunters claws.
Owlpaw stood straight, flicking her ears in frustration. "Oh hi Chap-"
"For the last time Berrypaw, it's Owlpaw, we don't go by our old names anymore," she snapped at him, "that was supposed to be my catch." The toms friendly eyes flashed with hurt.
"My bad, but I thought we could call each other by our old names just between us," Berrypaw mewed, tilting his head, "and it was only one squirrel, we'll find another." Owlpaw sighed at the toms optimism. Doesn't he know not to waste prey? Even it new-leaf? She thought bitterly to herself.
"Sorry for snapping, I just want to impress the clan, thats all," she apologized, settling down, the thought of their mentors watching them vanished.
"You are impressive!" The tom nudged her. She looked at him doubtfully. "You beat Doepaw in training!"
"Thats because I surprised her," Owlpaw narrowed her eyes at him. He nodded getting in the hint.
"Be more careful," he told her.
"I don't need to be careful!"
"It's to risky to be using your powers," he whispered.
"I know, it just slipped out!" Berrypaws eyes softened, he got closer nudging her.
"Come on, lets go replace that squirrel," he told her, with soft eyes.
"No time, the sun is falling, we should probably collect everything and find our mentors."
"Oh, but we could maybe sneak out to hunt sometime."
"Someday absolutely, I'd love to see you face after I catch way more prey than you!" She replied, yawning before going to dig up a thrush she caught earlier, "just not tonight!"
Owlpaw and Berrypaw carried their catches under neath the near flame aroused sky. Owlpaw ended up with a magpie, 2 thrush's, and a vole. Berrypaw brought home a plump frog, squirrel and shrew. The apprentices found their mentors, carrying their prey up to them.
Driftstorm looked down at what Owlpaw brought back. "Well done, that squirrel was a lose, but the others brought back quite a bit as well," he mewed, "I'd say you pass." The pale-gray tom looked at the others.
"Berrypaw passed as well, however you were upwind of that squirrel causing you to loose it, but I suppose since there was two going after the squirrel it was hard to tell." Owlpaw purred with amusement, as the tom trembled with excitement. "Lets head back to camp, Wasppaw and Wolfpaw are there already."
She watched the mentors get their paws, and begin their short trek to follow them. Owlpaw furrowed at Berrypaw to sat their looking at their piles. "Aren't we going?" She'd asked. He nodded, grabbing his squirrel putting it in her pile. "Berrypaw, what are you doing?"
