In her eight months in the Human World, Kailey had never known a school day to drag on as long as this one had. Of course, it didn't help that she kept checking the clock every five seconds as if she were expecting it to miraculously become the end of the day the next time she looked.
Luka had kept checking on her periodically, occasionally adding quick messages from her brothers too. It was sweet that they were worried, really it was. And she should be grateful that they were even alive and well enough to all be checking on her. Still, Kailey couldn't help but dread the times in which Luka's voice would ring through her head, always asking the same thing: 'Hey, how's school going?' A simple enough question, but one that was asked with enough of an edge to allow Kailey to understand the real meaning.
Really, she should be happy about it. But, it was getting increasingly frustrating and it was taking all of Kailey's self-control not to snap at him. Especially considering he had agreed not to constantly check on her, and to leave her to come to him if she needed help.
To be fair, she shouldn't really be complaining. Not only because it made her an ungrateful bitch but also because it made her a total hypocrite, considering she was doing the same to Mika. Kailey would use Luka's check-ins as reminders to ask Mika how she was feeling, then to stare at her phone until Mika responded. It was a miracle she hadn't been caught by her teacher yet.
As if on cue, Luka asked once again. And once again, Kailey gave the same response: 'Everything's fine, quit worrying. I love you,'.
'I love you too, stay safe. Sam says to remember to check on Mika and report back to him, if possible,' He said, not bothering to hide his amusement at Sam's newfound worry for Mika.
Kailey huffed a laugh, though she had to admit that she was proud of Sam for asking despite the now merciless teasing he was likely receiving from their brothers.
'She was fine last I checked, but I'll check back in with her now,' She said, quickly focusing her attention on Mika.
'Hey, Mika-Chu! Is everything still Ok over there?'
Kailey flipped her phone out of her pocket, keeping it on her lap under the desk so that the teacher couldn't see.
She kept staring at the screen, waiting for it to light up with a text. Nothing.
'Mika? Are you OK??'
Still no response. Kailey was about to panic when the speakers crackled, the Principal's voice following soon after.
"Attention students: due to an emergency faculty meeting, we will be closing the school for the remainder of the day and this entire week. Please leave school quickly and quietly and have a good rest of the week," She said calmly, though she still left chaos in her wake.
'Navouru, something's wrong, I think Diana's here... Mika won't answer her phone and the Principal has just randomly let us all out of school, I'm going to investigate around Mika's class now so don't worry,' Kailey said, dodging her friends' outstretched hands and rushing out of the classroom.
"Hey, Kailey?! You can't just dodge high fives like that, it's so rude!" Iris shouted, rushing to keep up with Kailey.
"Is everything Ok? You never miss a high five, especially not when we get to miss a whole week of school," Bella added, close behind.
Kailey grimaced at the interruption, "Can you guys please shut the fuck up? I'll speak to you later. Just go home, I need to find Mika," She snapped, barely slowing her walk.
