Ch. 12
Charlotte took a deep breath and told her parents the whole story. They'd heard what had happened from the nurses, but the way Charlotte explained it was completely different. She didn't say much about Michael's condition, but her parents knew it couldn't be good.
"So, how is Michael?" Sylvia asked, directing her question at Calum. Cal took Charlotte's hand and interlocked their fingers. Even though they'd only known each other for a few days, they had a lot to bond over and they were already really close.
"He's, uh, not good. He's barely holding on," he said quietly, looking down at the ground and rubbing his thumb across the smooth skin of Charlotte's hand.
"I'm so sorry," Sylvia whispered, grabbing her husband's hand. Charlotte kept quiet while Calum continued to hold a conversation with her parents. She kept looking at Calum's hand intertwined with her own and how his muscles would flex and the veins would pop out when he squeezed it.
"...Right, Charlotte?" her dad said. She jerked her head up at the sound of her name and saw that everyone was looking at her.
"I'm sorry, what?" she asked.
"Weren't you listening to anything we were saying?" her mom asked.
"Not really. I wasn't paying attention. Sorry," she shrugged.
Her mom chuckled, "It's okay. We were just talking about how this whole thing was a freak accident and there was nothing you could do to prevent it."
"It's not your fault," Calum whispered, squeezing her hand and looking down at her. She gave him a weak smile and returned the squeeze.
"Charlotte? Are you ready to go?" Dr. O'Brien asked, walking into the room.
"Go where?" she asked, confused.
"Home," the doctor smiled. Charlotte nodded furiously and her parents laughed at her. Crystal came in a couple minutes after Dr. O'Brien checked some monitors and left the room. She brought a wheelchair and Calum assisted her in getting in the comfortable, black seat.
"We'll be right back, dear. Then we'll go home," her mom said and Charlotte smiled. Her parents left the room with Crystal following behind them, leaving Calum and Charlotte alone. He stood in front of her and she stared into his brown eyes.
"So... Will I ever see you again?" he asked and Charlotte let out a loud cackle.
"You make it sound like we just went on a date," she said, reaching out and taking his hand.
"Well, I think you've held my hand more than any couple does on a date," he joked, making Charlotte laugh again.
"Yeah, we'll definitely see each other again. Do you have your phone on you?" Calum nodded and used his other hand to pull it out of his pocket and unlock it. He took his hand away from hers and typed her name into the new contact space. She told him his phone number and he smiled and slipped his phone back in his pocket.
"Text me and keep me updated about Michael, please," she said as her mom walked back into the room.
"Absolutely," he said. "Bye, Charlotte." He leaned down and hugged her, quickly placing a kiss on her cheek. She blushed as he left the room, leaving just her and her mom. Sylvia assisted Charlotte in changing into sweat pants and a loose t-shirt, before allowing her dad back into the room for one last time.
"You ready?" Dave asked, standing behind her wheelchair.
She nodded, "Let's get out of here."
