Ch. 1

*2018*

"Oh my God, Michael?" Charlotte said, hoping to grab the attention of the boy standing a few feet in front of her with a large group of people around him. She was in the mall in a little town outside of Sydney, Australia with her friend, Christian, when she saw him. He turned around quickly and his green eyes met her brown ones.

"Hi!" he cheered as she walked towards him. "So, would you like for me to sign something, take a picture, or what?"

Charlotte looked confused, a little hurt by his words. She knew he was in a world-famous band now, but she never thought he'd forget her.

"No... None of that. Do you remember me?" Michael squinted and moved his head to the side, studying her face. He recognized her brown eyes and brown, curly hair, but he didn't know where he'd seen her before.

"I'm sorry, I don't think I do," he replied, feeling badly. Obviously, they had to have met before, and apparently it was a big deal to the girl standing in front of him. She appeared to be a couple of years younger and several inches shorter than him. He could tell she looked upset at his words.

"Charlotte. My name's Charlotte Mansen and it's because of something you did five years ago that I'm standing here today," she told him quietly.

"Oh my God," he breathed as he realized who she was. Without any warning, he came close and hugged her tightly. She returned the hug and felt her eyes pool with tears. She never thought the day would come that she would get to see the guy who saved her life when they were barely teenagers, especially since he was super famous now.

Christian watched on from a distance, wondering who the guy in the ripped band t-shirt and bright red hair was and why his best friend was hugging him. He watched as they released the hug and talked for a short time before pulling out their phones and giving them to each other, apparently exchanging numbers. He didn't like the fact that this guy he'd never seen before was already so close to the girl he was in love with.

"Charlotte," he called. She didn't turn to look at him, but instead held out her hand with one finger pointed, telling him to wait. Charlotte and Michael talked for another couple minutes before hugging again and parting their ways.

"Who is that?" Christian asked, obviously irritated.

"His name's Michael," she replied, pulling her phone out of her pocket.

"Obviously," he said, rolling his eyes. "But who is he?"

Charlotte smiled as she moved her thumbs across the screen, texting someone.

"Just a guy I knew when I was younger," she said. "Are you hungry? I am."

Christian sighed and nodded, so they walked out of the mall, leaving the subject of Michael alone. Christian didn't like the guy already, even though he didn't know who he was. The drive from the mall to Charlotte and Christian's favorite restaurant was short and awkward. Charlotte was in the passenger's seat, her eyes glued to her phone the entire time. The only sound that was made the entire ride was the CD they had quietly playing, Ed Sheeran's 'X'. They made it to the restaurant and sat down and ordered their lunch before saying a word to each other.

"Char, who are you texting?" Christian asked, pulling his own phone out of his pocket.

She shrugged, "Not important."

"It is, though. You've been texting since you met that guy in the mall and I'd like it if you spent some time with me since I'm leaving for America soon," he said, placing his phone in the middle of the table. They always put their phones there so they can spend time together, and they have a deal where the first person to grab their phone has to pay for the meal.

"We have three days until you leave and I plan on spending every second with you. Is it really that big of a deal that I'm texting Michael?" she asked, looking up from her phone as she talked.

"That guy from the mall?" he said, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back in his seat.

"No, the guy from the chicken farm," she sassed. "Would it make you feel better if I put my phone down and didn't touch it until you went to America?"

"Not that long, but I would appreciate it if you would hang out with me since we won't see each other for a couple weeks." Charlotte sighed and put her phone in the middle of the table, where it vibrated multiple times throughout their meal. They talked and laughed and had a good time, but Charlotte wanted to talk to Michael. After he changed her life so much, she felt like the least she could do to repay him was get to know him.

"So, I've never seen that Michael guy before. How do you know him?" Christian asked, finishing his meal as Charlotte, who had finished a few minutes ago, waited and watched him.

"Well, do you want to know the whole story?" she asked and he nodded. "Okay. It all happened five years ago and it's something I'll never forget."
