Ch. 13

*PRESENT DAY - 2018*

"So that's what happened.  Calum and I kept in contact for a while, and once I was able to, I went to the hospital and visited Michael as much as I could.  It just sucked because his parents wouldn't let me in when he was awake, because they were scared about how he would react knowing I was the one that almost killed him.  I talked to his mother and she told me this, and I completely understood.  I didn't want him to hate me," Charlotte explained, swirling her index finger around the edge of her glass.

"Wow," Christian whispered.  "So I guess you and Calum just lost touch or something?"

"Well, he got a girlfriend right after he and the guys started the band and she wouldn't let him talk to me.  We went to the same school, but we never really talked there.  We'd occasionally exchange glances and, if I was lucky, a smile, but we never got the chance to hang out and become friends after I recovered from the accident," she sighed.  "And that sucked.  He texted me one day and said 'sorry, I'm not allowed to talk to you anymore,' and then he never responded to my texts or calls ever again."

"Dang.  I want you to know that no matter who I start dating, I'm not gonna tell you that.  If my girlfriend says I have to choose between you and her, I choose you."  Charlotte smiled goofily at his comment and struggled to hold back a laugh.

"Why are you laughing?" Christian asked, a smile stretching its way across his face.

"I don't know, that was just really cheesy and cute, but also stupid," she replied.  "Okay, we can leave now."

Christian nodded and stood up.  They grabbed their phones and walked out of the restaurant, Charlotte texting away.  Once they got in the car and started driving away, Charlotte turned down the radio and put her phone to her ear.

"Hello?... Yeah... Uh, I don't think so... Sure... Let me ask him..." she turned to Christian and pulled the phone away from her ear.  "Do you want to go Michael's concert tonight and hang out with the band after?"

Christian took a deep breath.  He didn't really want to, and he didn't really want Charlotte spending a lot of time with Michael, even if he did save her life.  But, for her sake, he agreed, making her squeal of happiness.

"Uh huh... Okay... So you just want me to tell them we know you, or... Okay, that works... Yup, see you tonight!... Bye."

She hung up the phone and turned the radio back up.  The song 'Tenerife Sea' flowed through the speakers and filled the car, as well as Charlotte softly humming along and looking out the window.

"So, what's the band called?  Do I know any of their music?  I don't want to look like an idiot just standing there while there's fangirls all around us screaming every word," he said, turning onto Charlotte's street, where she lived in a tiny two bedroom house with her friend from year 12, Daniela.

"They're called 5 Seconds of Summer," she said.

"Oh gosh, my sister's going to hate me," Christian mumbled.  "She's a huge fan and she was super mad we couldn't get tickets to the concert tonight."

"Aww, well, I would say we could take her, but I'm not sure how the guys would feel about it," she said as they pulled into her driveway.  "Well, thanks for taking me out today.  I'll pick you up at about five; Michael said we should get there about 5:30 so we can hang out and watch sound check.  Is that okay?"

                "Yup, that's fine," he smiled.

"Okay, cool.  Bye, Chris."  She closed the door and quickly walked into her house, where Daniela was sitting on the couch, listening to music and flipping through a magazine.  Charlotte walked in front of the coffee table, swatting at Daniela's feet that were propped on the table.  Charlotte recognized the song Daniela was humming to herself.

"Hey," she said and Daniela looked up.  "Are you listening to Long Way Home?"

Daniela nodded, "yeah.  These guys have a concert tonight here in Sydney.  I wish we had tickets..."

"Well..." Charlotte said.  She hesitated in telling Daniela what was going on, as she was a big fan and would probably get mad at Charlotte for going with Christian and not her.  "I'm going."

"You're WHAT?!" Daniela said, yanking her headphones out of her ears and sitting up straight, throwing her magazine to the side.

"Yeah... Michael may or may not have hooked Christian and me up with free tickets and backstage passes," she said and it looked like Daniela's eyes were going to pop out of her head.

"Of course, the one day I don't go with you to the mall, you meet my favorite band and get free... Did you say backstage passes?"

"Yeah, he asked for Chris and me to hang out after the show.  He said they'd order pizza," Charlotte said, plopping down onto a white chair to the right of the couch and pulled her shoes off.

"Oh my God," Daniela sighed, running a finger through her long blonde hair.  Charlotte's phone dinged and she pulled it out of her pocket, seeing a new text from Michael.  She read it and called him, rather than replying.

"Hey Mike, do you think you could help me out with something?" Charlotte asked once he picked up.  Daniela looked at her shocked.   She knew it was the Michael, and she was so grateful for her friend.
