Ch. 2
*FIVE YEARS AGO*
"Elin, throw it to me!" Charlotte called as her and three of her friends were playing Frisbee in the street. It was a fairly empty neighborhood, barely any houses and a lot were vacant, and with it being the middle of the day on a Tuesday, they didn't expect much traffic.
"Did you hear about that guy from our school that got arrested?" her friend Brooklynn asked and the others shook their heads.
"Apparently he got caught with stolen pot in the school bathroom." Charlotte, Elin, and Alina looked at her with wide eyes.
"Who was it?" Alina asked, throwing the Frisbee.
"I don't know him, but his name was Jacob," Brooklynn shrugged.
"Do you guys want something to drink?" Alina requested after about an hour of Frisbee and gossip. The girls nodded, so Alina and Brooklynn went inside to get water while Charlotte and Elin stayed outside and threw the disc some more.
"What are you doing this weekend?" Elin asked.
"I don't know, probably shopping and eating at Chick Fil A, as usual," Charlotte replied. Elin threw the Frisbee a little too hard, and it landed in the road. Without thinking anything about it, Charlotte walked into the road to retrieve the disk.
"CHARLOTTE LOOK OUT!" Elin screamed as a car started speeding down the road. Charlotte looked and saw the car, but was too stunned to move. She felt something run into the side of her before landing on the pavement a few feet away from the car. She felt an intense pain in her arm, chest, and leg, and they hurt to the point that she couldn't move.
"Oh my God," she heard a male voice say, as well as Elin's cries and screams. Charlotte looked down and saw blood all over the road. The car drove away without stopping, leaving the two girls and a couple of guys they had never met. She sat up with assistance from Elin and saw a young man, no older than 18, laying lifeless in the road.
"Oh my God," she repeated, breathing heavily.
"Charlotte, are you okay?" Elin asked, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Forget about me, call an ambulance for that guy," Charlotte whispered, pointing to the guy with dirty blond hair, being examined by a guy on his knees with brown hair and brown eyes. Elin pulled out her phone as Alina and Brooklynn came back outside. They dropped the drinks and ran to the road, seeing everyone gathered there. Several people came out from surrounding houses, having heard the screams.
"What the hell just happened?" Charlotte asked, putting her hand to her head. "Did he just jump out here to save me?"
"Yeah," the guy breathed, checking his friend for his pulse. Elin was on the phone with an emergency responder, sobbing as she described what happened.
"But... why?" she asked, pulling her hand away from her head and seeing it covered in blood. "We don't know you."
"That's just who he is," the guy whispered.
"I'm so sorry... Is he your brother?" Alina and Brooklynn were asking Charlotte a multitude of questions, but she wasn't paying any attention.
"Might as well be. We're best friends and we have been for years," the guy replied. "I'm Calum."
"Charlotte," she told him. The group of teenagers heard sirens in the distance, taking what seemed like forever to get closer as Elin came back and joined the group. The paramedics rushed out of the back of the truck once it was parked in the middle of the street, right behind the scene. There was a lot of noise; from yelling, crying, chatter, whispering, sniffling, and all kinds of movement. Charlotte started feeling very lightheaded, and she fell backwards into Brooklynn's arms.
