I awoke to the vibrating of my cell phone, signaling it was time for me to get up. I glanced at the clock. 3 am. I rolled out of bed, my eyes adjusting quickly to the darkness. I slipped my cell phone into my pocket and tiptoed downstairs, trying to be polite and not wake my parents. I grabbed my jacket and backpack, slipping quietly out the door and taking off at a sprint towards the woods, which were about 150 yards away. As soon as I got beyond the first line of trees, I felt my teeth growing sharper, my vision taking on a gold haze around the edges. I leapt forward at the same time I felt the snow-white fur burst out of its prison inside my human body. I landed on the ground on all four paws, sitting back on my haunches and letting a howl pierce the chilly morning air. Some birds chirped and fluttered nervously out of a nearby tree. I saw my breath float into the still dark sky as I howled again. A couple minutes later, I heard paws pounding against the moist earth about a mile away. I tested the air and let out a yip of joy. My best friend Bree sprinted out of the woods to stand by my side, her golden eyes shimmering. They were a shade darker than my bright honey-tinted eyes, showing that I was the alpha.

"What's up, boss?" Bree asked in a joking tone.

"Perimeter check. If Chad doesn't show up in a minute, I'm going in his house and dragging him out by the scruff of his neck." I said in a pissed off tone.

"Hey, hey, chill Kylie, I'm right here." Chads voice said in my mind. He let out a whimper as he thought about what I had just told Bree about dragging him out of his house.

A second later, a sleek golden-coated wolf stood by my side. Bree tilted her giant brown head to the side, listening for the last arrival. Anthony. I scanned the trees until I spotted him.

The biggest wolf by far, Anthony strolled towards us at a leisurely pace, his charcoal gray paws thumping against the dirt, his nails scraping the ground. This was my chosen mate. I was ordered to mate with him and he would be the male alpha. Someday I would be ordered to bear his children. His eyes were more of a silver mixed with gold. He was the most feared wolf of this generation that was on our side. His dad had been from the other side. The evil side. Their eyes were silver, while our side had gold eyes. His mother had been tricked into bearing Audrey Mahone's son.

After that, his mother (Lisa Mahone) had ran when she figured out who Audrey really was. She had taken flight while she was 8 months pregnant, and she had successfully escaped. Now, here was Anthony.

Anthony walked up to me and dipped his head slightly to make eye contact with me.

"Hello." He whispered only to me. His voice was soft and reassuring in my mind. I was the only wolf that didn't fear him. Chad and Bree mentally cleared their throats to remind us that we had patrol. I curled my top lip above my razor-sharp teeth and turned my head slightly to glance at them.

"Okay, let's go." I said with a growl. I shot off at a sprint, Anthony at my side. Bree and Chad went the other way, our intentions being to meet up at school. Our job was to run the perimeter of Howard County. The adult wolves ran the whole perimeter of Maryland. The trees blurred as I pushed myself faster. Anthony's long and muscular legs allowed him to keep pace with me easily. He ran close to my side, his fur brushing against mine as we flew through the woods.

At 5:30, we had cleared our side of the perimeter. We doubled back and raced to our school, Hammond High. When Anthony and I arrived, I looked through Bree's eyes. She and Chad were about half an hour away. Their small stature and shorter legs made them slower than us. I lay on the ground, in sight of the school but still partially concealed in the woods. School didn't start until 7:30. Anthony laid beside me, his head resting on the back of my neck as I closed my eyes to rest.

I awoke from a much-needed nap and shook my head slightly to clear it. Anthony's head had slipped off my neck, and his sharp teeth lay a mere centimeter from my face, his warm breath weaving itself through my fur as he exhaled. His eyes were closed, so I knew he had fallen asleep. I glanced behind me and saw Bree and Chad training. Chad had Bree pinned on the ground, his jaws at her throat. He had just won that round. I chuckled as Bree leapt to her feet angrily, shaking her ruff and exposing her canines. I glanced back in front of me and saw the school. The sky was pretty light now. I stood up, shaking my own ruff and huffing angrily as I realized I had to spend another day in school as a human. A weak creature that had dulled senses. The only plus was that we had hands, and lips for kissing... I glanced at Anthony as I thought about that, letting out a choked bark meant for a laugh. I stood on my hind legs, closing my eyes and letting the warmth spread through my body as I felt my true form disappear. I opened my eyes to feel my backpack on my back, and my cell phone tucked away in my pocket. I pulled it out and checked the time.
