*Ava's POV*

I woke up to the sun shining through the window, right through my poor eyelids and straight into my eyes, as brown as coffee. I mean they must have been coffee at this point from how boiled they were being from the god dang sun attacking me in my sleep.

I got up and dressed in the last pair of clean clothes I had left and got out the food for today.

Reese was already up and wandering around the garden, most likely scavenging for any food left. I knew he'd find nothing. I had copied his actions for long enough to know. Whether Reese accepted it or not, Ivy had saved us from almost certain death by giving us that food. Which was not how I had expected to survive.

"Don't get killed. I need you. You hear me Ava? I love you." Reese held my hands, lecturing me about some stupid stuff to make sure I basically boarded myself up in the tree-house to stay safe. It was ridiculous.

"I survived long before I found you. I'll be fine!" I gave him a reassuring smile.

"Stay safe too." I added, now more sincere with my words. I didn't want him to get hurt. Not after all he's been through.

"So have we." Ivy's words rang through my head.

He nodded and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. I flushed bright red and awkwardly laughed.

"See you soon."

"Just don't eat everything. You eat enough as it is."

"Oh." my smile was instantly gone.

"What?" he laughed at me, seemingly not caring.

"That was mean." I told him, expecting an apology.

"Oh, you're just sensitive, it was only a joke!" Reese defended, patting me on the shoulder.

*Ivy's POV*

I arrived to pick up Reese on a motorcycle, which I had found and repaired just for the occasion, not having had such a priority earlier. The bicycle was also easier to control then this, which added to my nerves as I parked and stepped through the gate. Reese was soon shaking my hand and calling me a lady for getting a motorcycle for him.

"I am driving. Get on." I told him firmly and pulled on my helmet. He watched me closely.

"Fine."

Soon I was barely avoiding crashing into basically anything in my way with Reese hanging on tight with his arms around my waist. I could hear every prayer he muttered under his breath since I had silenced the motorcycle. I couldn't afford racing against a whole horde while driving. Not without experience.

In no time we had stopped at my own gate, and I had walked into my garden, the vehicle at my hands with him right behind, taking deep breaths.

While I walked straight to the caravan in the middle of the front garden, surrounded with flowers and random bear traps, Reese wandered towards the house and purely stared at it.

I got him a cup of water and sat down inside the caravan, waiting for him.

"Sit down." he chose a chair and sat.

"Your love was quite sudden," Reese barely bat an eye at my comment.

"Listen, Elijah, wait, I am sorry. I meant-" I stopped myself upon seeing his body language. Reese had gone still, and his hand was gripping the glass so hard that his knuckles were turning white.

"I knew it." I jumped up from my seat, trying to breathe.

"Ivy. My name. Is Reese. You hear that?" He hissed, not looking me in my eyes.

"Are they really dead? How did you survive? I- I thought you were gone," My voice finally breaks, and I have to keep blinking to stop myself from crying.

"Shut up."

I ran to him and hugged him. Hard. There was no past or future in that moment. Just the present. Just me and him.

"Why did they even come for me? I was nowhere close to being their favorite. They hated me." He cried into my shoulder, trembling.

"The loved you, they just didn't know how to show it.." my voice shaking as I spoke I swallowed down my sobs.
"I  love you, you are my brother. You are my  favorite."

"I hate them. I can't help it. I'm glad they died, Ivy."

"...I don't care. I'm just beyond happy to see you alive."

We stayed still for a while, just like that. Crying until all our tears had run dry and our hearts were empty. It felt as if flowers were growing in my guts. He was back. Elijah, Reese, my brother was back. He was alive and well, and he was here. I never wanted him to leave again. Never. My sibling, my brother, my family was with me again. Had been right under my nose for the past few weeks and I hadn't even noticed.

"I'm so sorry. Ava was right. I should have been kinder to you." I whispered, a new wave of tears and emotion overcoming me.

He just pulled away and wiped his eyes. I took a few deep breaths before standing back.

"She loves me. It was quick because there's no time to take it slow in a zombie-ridden world."

"I just worry for her," He pinched his nose when I said that "I worry because as much as I hate to admit it, you've changed."

"It's their fault, you know."

I sighed, blinking hard, "I understand that. I just want what is best for everyone, alright?"

"I want to be with her. She is alive, and that seems to make me picky enough these days. Besides, when did I tell you to meddle with my love life?"

That wasn't the conversation I wanted to have with him. Not after what we've all gone through.
Not right after I got him back.

"Do you want to see what alternations I have made to the house?" I suggested, hoping it would reduce the tension.

We both got up and walked to the door. I then opened the door and gestured for him to enter.

Once he was inside Reese didn't hesitate to look left and right, observing the experiments and equipment I had placed in various locations, ranging from tubes and liquids on chairs and tables to books, papers and notebooks stacked on the floor.

Since the zombie apocalypse started, I've decided to pursue my science dreams because I assumed I would die soon. So I turned my house into a huge lab and started all my experimenting. This is where I made my silent guns, my distraction device, my car traps and pretty much everything else.

I was pretty passionate of it all.

The place was pretty banged up because of the dangerous exploding weapons I have been working on. They were supposed to be like bombs but harmless to humans and deadly to zombies. I hadn't figured it out yet but I was close.
