*Ivy's POV*

As soon as I was informed of the living thing that Ava had found, I grabbed my first aid kit and bicycle to find out what creature she had dragged into her base.

I pedaled quickly with a quiver placed on my back, the first aid kit and a spare kitchen knife inside. I had decided to not bring my arrows nor bow.

I struggled to remember her address, but with trial and error I finally remembered when I had last been over, to observe the location and ask a few questions, and I arrived at her gate only barely panting.

I stepped through the gate and parked my bike against the fence, before wandering over to where she stood by it.

"Are you sure it won't turn?"

She nodded calmly.

I grabbed the first aid kit from my quiver and kneeled down. Ava watched as I checked the pulse and cleaned some minor wounds.

"What's wrong with them?" She finally chirped.

"Where did you find this?"

"On my street, collapsed before I saw them." She sighed the last words out.

"Why are you so adamant about it being human?" I raised an eyebrow at her and watched her lean down to me.

"Because they are." She spit.

I sighed. "Find them some nutrients, and do not forget water. And a clean cloth if you will."

She rushed up the rope ladder into her treehouse, disappearing through the door soon enough. I grabbed the 'human' and sat their head up on my lap, grabbed a flashlight and opened their eyelids to check the eyes.

Just as I was done Ava rushed out and handed over a ripe tomato, bottled water, and a light blue towel.

"Lift the legs." I watched her hesitate before grabbing them, and helping me carry the human closer to the circular pool of water, where I placed the end of the towel into water and used to wipe the dirt off their face.

I decided to stay the night with Ava, mainly because she insisted so, and because I was curious about the human.

"What now?" She questioned.

We'd moved the person under the tree and set up somewhat of a habitable camp for us to sleep there. However we made a deal that I would sleep in the treehouse since I did not have complete trust that the person would not attack at night.

"Sleep." I told her, and began to climb up the wobbly ladder.

***

I was shook awake at such an ungodly hour that the sun had not even dared show it's autumn face. I vowed that I would not wake up for the whole day in pure spite for whoever dared pull me from my peaceful slumber.

A good hour later, I still sat beside the human while Ava worked on her base's defense system. Damn humanity. We all should have died already.

She had come up with the ideas to strengthen her fence, and build a watch tower. I was helping her along with planning and such, as her few braincells couldn't be trusted with keeping her safe.

"Where am I?" I heard voice question.

"I see you're awake now. Relax, you're safe here."
"Why are- you shouldn't be-" the humans voice shook slightly upon me looking down at them. I didn't concentrate on anything but calming the person down. Panic was dangerous.
"May I ask your name?"

"It's Reese"

"Are you a boy or girl or other?" A person beside me spoke.

I jumped up in surprise, only to find myself staring at Ava.

"Calm down you damp sleeve! It's just me." She rolled her eye with a playful smile and concentrated on Reese. I don't know how, but that insult made me more uncomfortable then any other.

"How did you sneak up on me?" I whispered in disbelief.

Reese now smirked at us, all sign of uncertainty from earlier gone from his face, and sat up.

I looked over at him. Sage green eyes and blond, slightly curly hair. His nose had a simple, but stunning shape, and his jaw was perfectly defined. His ears were perfectly round on top, and his whole face had a certain twinkle of happiness and chaos to it.

This was the first time I properly payed attention to his looks, and it disturbed me to see the resemblance of someone I believed was dead on this humans face.

"Can you get up?" Ava inquired while I took a step back, frowning at him.

"Yeah, I think so."

Ava and I sighed in relief.

I looked about myself, observing my surroundings. Thinking about it couldn't help notice that I've never been at Ava's base. I only had known the location, nothing more.

I looked around. Behind me was the gate to enter. It was made taller to stop zombies from climbing over. The same with the walls on the sides of the gate.

In the middle stood a tree and a rope ladder hung from it. On top was a spacious treehouse, which held somewhat of a bedroom and kitchen. Around the tree was a pool. A donut hole had been dug around the tall tree leaving it on an island.

To get over the 3m deep, and 2m wide hole which was filled with water you had to swing on a rope. On the rope near the bottom was a circular seat so you could sit on it while you swung to get over easier.

To avoid the water soaking into the ground, Ava had placed tarp on the bottom and sides of the donut shaped pool. Behind the garden was a house that had been cleared out and blocked so zombies couldn't sneak in through the house to the garden.

I marvelled at the fact that this dumb girl had been smart enough to think of the dangers a house has.

1.countless corners and rooms that you can't monitor safely without risking a zombie jumping on you.

2.countless problems a house can have like a pipe leaking, electricity wires broken, gas leak et cetera

3.the risk that the house would be robbed by wandering survivors, and danger of getting kidnapped or mistaken as a zombie if you happened to be in the house as the robbers did so.

A/n the hardest part of writing this chapter was trying to pretend I know what Ava and Ivy need to do to help Reese 💪
