Another two days had passed without a word from Romeo just the same. She contemplated many times on dropping by at his home for some answers but the thought of his wife being there made her change her mind. What would Hillary think if another woman appeared at her door asking for her husband?
'God, I'm so stupid. What am I doing with him?' She asked herself with a frustrated groan as she rubbed her forehead aggressively.
"With who?"
She looked up at Zach with wide eyes. Oh, she had been so deep in her own thoughts that she forgot he was even there.
"Huh?" She voiced, completely unaware that she spoke out loud.
"You said something about him. Who is him?" He inquired, cocking an eyebrow in question.
She forced a laugh and shook her head violently, "Oh, it's nothing."
Zach narrowed his eyes suspiciously. He had been informing her about his trip to Europe four years ago and she wasn't even listening. He knew she wasn't uninterested, she just seemed to have a lot on her mind...about a man.
She was lying to him and usually she'd tell him everything.
"Hailey?" He called, pulling her out of her thoughts again.
"Hmm?" She hummed before buttoning her lips and staring widely at him.
"What's going on?" He pressed.
She sighed. 'What do I tell him?' She thought. She certainly could not tell him she was dating their boss. She'd certainly get a lecture from him just like Cassie had done. Cassie.
"Cassie and I...argued," She responded softly.
"What about?"
"Um," She gulped, "I don't wanna talk about it, but we argued and it was so bad. I...I told her to get out of my house and we haven't talked to each other since,"
Zach's eyes widened in surprise, "You told her to get out?"
Hailey facepalmed herself embarrassingly, "Yeah, I didn't mean to. I was just mad. For once, I just wanted her on my side and to be happy for me—"
"Stop. Stop right there," Zach cut in, putting up his hand, "Cassie has always been there for you and me also. She's always on your side. If it seems like she's no longer on your side, then you must be doing something really stupid,"
Hailey released a deep breath as she looked away at nothing. She was doing something really stupid. Foolish, even. Dating a married man was the most foolish thing she had ever done. But, Romeo was so kind to her, so sweet, so romantic. So sexy. Could any woman at all resist him?
"I'm fine," She said to him, reassuring her self.
'He's alright, he will call,' She told herself.
"Something's bothering you, I can tell," Zach spoke in concern, staring intently at her.
"Yeah, but it's fine. Everything will work itself out," She tried to reassure him.
Zach didn't want to hear that. He was very concerned about her. She wasn't usually like that. Hailey was always chirpy.
"Who are you dating?" He questioned.
Upon recognizing his question, she almost choked on her own saliva. How did he know she was dating?
"What?"
"Don't play dumb, Hail. I'm not stupid. I know you are dating someone. Now, who is he and what is he doing to you?"
"Hold up. Firstly, he's not doing anything to me, alright? He's a really great guy. Secondly, it's...nobody you know," She swallowed.
"Why hide him, then?" He continued.
"I'm not. You know I'm a private person,"
"Mmm-hmm," He hummed, with narrowed, suspicious eyes.
What the hell? Why was she even hiding what was bothering her? Zach was her best friend. She didn't have to tell him about Romeo but she could at least tell him what was bothering her.
"Um, I've been dating this guy for two months and we talk everyday. The last time I saw him was last Friday and he dropped me home after our date. I haven't heard from him since," She muttered, looking hopelessly at him.
"He haven't called?" He questioned, ignoring the fact that she had been hiding this from him for two months.
"No,"
"Haven't texted?"
"No,"
"Did you visit his house?"
She swallowed nervously.
"No," She lied.
She knew if she had told him that she knew where he lived, he would've suggested that she visit him and that wasn't a good idea. She was not ready to meet her boyfriend's wife.
"How can you be dating someone for two months and not know where he lives?" He said, giving her a flat look.
She shrugged, "I just...wasn't ready to...see where he lives."
"Mmm-hmm," He hummed.
She had a hard time telling if he bought her dumb story or not. He just stared at her as if trying to read her. Zach knew her, and he knew her well. Something was not adding up. What he did not understand, was why she was not being plain with him. What was she hiding?
"I'd advise you not to think too much about it. Maybe he lost his phone or he's on vacation or something. He'll call, alright? Think positively," He cooed in a soft voice.
She released a deep sigh. Those were the same words Cassie had told her. Maybe she really was overthinking. He would call. He always does. He was fine. He was alive and well.
"And, about Cassie. You need to call her. She's our best friend and she cares deeply about you,"
Hailey nodded in agreement, "Yeah, I know."
"Good, let's go. We went ten minutes over our lunch. If Mr. Snider ever finds out, we're screwed," Zach laughed, rising to his feet.
She forced a laugh. Zach would be screwed but not her. Romeo would probably just spank her. The thought of it made her core clench. Fuck, how she missed him.
