→ Two kids, thousands of miles apart.

Dallas didn't sleep for seven days after he arrived in Tulsa. Cigarettes, Coke, and fast food were all the twelve-year-old ate in a desperate attempt to stay awake.

As soon as his eyes closed, he saw the blade of his knife shining in the hazy moonlight.

He saw the blade cut through the boy's shirt and flesh.

He was Dominic fall to the ground, dead.

Dallas decided that staying awake for days at a time was much better than ever seeing Dominic's lifeless eyes, burning their way into his memory.

The worst part came when he finally did sleep and forgot where he was. Most nights, Dallas would wake, expecting his sister to be lying beside him. Then, he would come to his senses, and reality would come crashing down.

You're in Tulsa. She's in New York.

Most nights, Dallas laid awake. He would wonder if Hannah thought about him, the way he thought about her.

A thousand miles away, Hannah pushed her mattress in front of the bedroom door.

If Charlie felt something in front of the door, maybe he would stop trying to get in.

The bed was cold as she sat there, head in her hands. It had never felt this big, either. Sure the mattress was tiny, only twin size, but she had grown accustomed to sharing it with her brother.

Now her brother was gone.

Thunder screamed against the brick walls, rain slammed against the windows.

Charlie and Verna threatened each other out in the hall.

It was the first storm Hannah ever faced on her own. It wouldn't be her last.
