A single breath
the first thing we do in life
One consistent moment;
A deep inhale
Before one small sound comes out of our lips
For the first time.
When we take a deep breath
To center ourselves
The blink of eyelashes
Fluttering closed, touching together
As ruby lips open and exhale,
Before a first kiss
Nerves roiling up inside of us
Like a stormy ocean.
Inhale sharply
At the first glance of a child
Who grows in front of your eyes,
Breathing deeply as they run through patches of grass,
Or pump their legs on a bicycle,
Or slide down those old metal slides,
The ones that used to be new
When you were little.
Exhale, smiling
As you catch the first glimpse of a grandchild
With a soft baby face
The grown child in front of you once had.
Inhale, shakily
As you squeeze your loved one's hands
Withered with age and experience and wisdom,
And close your eyes quietly.
The same black eyelashes
That closed and opened long ago
And your whole life
Ruby lips open one last time
To exhale softly.
