Louis was eight years old when kids at school started to notice how different he was.

Like when he'd get bored listening to the boys talk about trucks and robots and football and he'd go over to talk with the girls about horses and princesses and dolls.

(Well, Louis did like talking about superheroes, mostly because he found them really fit in the movies.)

Or when they were doing an activity where the boys had to go on one side and the girls on the other and he was perfectly content right in the middle but his teacher kindly ushered him to where the boys stood.

Or, more specifically, Heidi Anne's Halloween party. Her mom was involved in basically everything at the school, so she always had to invite everyone in her class.

And of course, while the boys argued over what Power Ranger they wanted to be, Louis was hoping to be Tinkerbell.

He had come home that night to Kristen fixing me a snack. She had basically become another parent, her and Amelie both.

Louis thinks that maybe, since he was missing a mum, God decided to give him two.

He excitedly told her about the party, and she had said that they'd go out to get my costume after he finished his homework.

Which he did faster than he had ever done in his life.

Kristen picked up the money Louis' dad would always leave her so she could buy things for him (since he was never there), and they took off in her cool, yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Louis liked it because it had eyelashes on it.

When they got there, Amelie was there as well because she wanted to help with Louis' costume since she claimed Kristen knew nothing about fashion. Kristen would just roll her eyes and peck her cheek.

He had been strolling down the Disney aisle in the costume store, holding both Kristen and Amelie's hands, looking like a proper family, when he spotted it. Louis dragged them towards it hastily; a store brand, full set Tinkerbell costume. At the time, the boy thought it was the most beautiful thing ever.

Louis was so ecstatic, he had wanted to take it home right away. But Kristen laughed and said she needed to look for his size before they bought it so it'd fit him. While she attended to that, Amelie and Louis chatted about the costume and she said he would look so beautiful in it.

That's when he had heard a middle aged woman scoff next to us. She butted in and told Amelie that it's bad enough Louis was being raised by two moms, but now they were forcing him to be gay.

He didn't really understand much of the discussion after that, Amelie had been using a lot of big words to support her argument against the lady.

Louis was kind of upset after the woman walked off with a huff, because it was his fault that Amelie had to do that for him. He didn't really understand much at the time, but he did know that he couldn't help liking "girly" things, even if it seemed to upset people.

Nonetheless, later on when they got home Louis ran to get changed. While he was adjusting the leaf green dress, Kristen had knocked and said that his dad was on the phone.

Louis' dad used to call him every day at five while he was at work. He doesn't do it anymore, Louis thinks it's because I could just call him if I needed anything.

But now he can't exactly call him to say he needs his dad back.

His dad had known about the party and he told Louis to have fun and be safe, and if anyone tried to hurt him, to tell an adult.

Louis had been too excited, so his answers were short and his 'I love you's' hurried so he could finish his costume. He wishes he would've cherished those phone calls a bit more.

Louis begged Amelie to do his make up, but she was hesitant, mostly because she didn't want him to wear so much at such a young age. But he convinced her enough for some lip gloss, mascara, and a brush of blush.

They dropped him off with a kiss on the cheek after lecturing him about strangers and the danger of dark corners and locked doors. Louis promised he'd be safe and skipped up to the front door.

Louis doesn't recall a lot of the details of the party, but he does remember some adults confusing him for a little girl, and a boy and his friend laughing at him.

But most of the girls in Louis' class were pleasantly surprised. They said they liked his costume and that he looked really pretty, and they had played some sort of game with all the fairies on one team and the princesses on the other.

Overall, he had a good time, and everyone at school now knew Louis wasn't a normal boy. And, at the time, they were okay with that.

He kind of wishes it was like that now.
