MARCUS PORTER was only eleven years old when he first heard the story of The Witch, Sarah Fier. Growing up, Marcus was pretty much... what you would call, a troubled child. That's what his parents always called him anyway whenever they talked about him. But no one really thought it was so strange since most Shadysiders were troublemakers.
His parents, Susan and Adam tried their best to try and make him behave better, especially at school ever since he was old enough to talk. He use to cuss despite being a child. It never worked. None of it did, "stop", "you're grounded", "you're in big trouble", any of it.
Until Susan brought it up, "remember that time back in 1978 and people kept saying Tommy Slater did all of it because of the Witch?" She asked her husband who glanced up immediately. "What?" He says and she looks around, thinking a bit more about the idea.
"I... think that we should scare Marcus into behaving better." She says and Adam stared at his wife in slight confusion. "With the fucked up story about the Witch?" He then asked and Susan looks at him, nodding her head.
"Marcus! Come here!"
The eleven year old boy was setting up a prank in his bedroom and grunted, standing up. He heads down the hall, entering the livingroom, "what?" He says, seeing his parents sitting together in the couch. Susan pats the spot between the two of them but he sits down onto the couch chair across them. "What is it?" He asked, out of sheer curiosity and his mother glanced to his father, sighing softly.
"We wanted to tell you a story... because of the way you've been behaving lately, we worry you might be in danger." Adam told his son who's brows furrow together in confusion. "In danger? What?" He says and Susan nods.
"There's a woman, no, a witch. Who takes little kids who don't listen to their parents... or do bad things." She says as she looks at the eleven year old who just stared blankly at them. They're unsure of his reaction at first, so they keep telling the story. "In 1666, she was accused of witchcraft... so they hung her on a branch, but she managed to escape. She cut her hand off to keep her grip on Shadyside, cursing it by coming after troublemaking kids..."
Marcus was unsure at first, he kept glancing up and down before he finally looked at them. "Before the witch's final breath, she found a way to cheat her death. By cutting off her wicked hand, she kept her grip upon our land. She reaches from beyond the grave, to make good men her wicked slaves. She'll take your blood, she'll take your head. She'll follow you until you're dead." Adam repeats the nursery rhyme about the Witch of Shadyside.
Marcus stood up quickly, "o-okay, I'll... I'll start being good, just s-stop talking about her." He says and rushed off towards his bedroom. Susan looked at Adam with a small smile as her husband nods slowly. "It worked." Adam whispers and Susan nods.
Marcus quickly disassemble his prank apart before putting everything away and sitting there. That night was the first night he had a bad dream about Sarah Fier. He woke up in the middle of the night, nearly 3 am. It happened repeatedly after until his friends told him the story about the witch was bullshit, so he stopped having nightmares after and started acting up again, but more secretly, because now he's a teenager in high school.
Now he's seventeen years old, in high school, who knows the story about Sarah Fier was used against him as some sort of twisted way to make him behave better, sort of like Santa. Just a more fucked up Santa, because in this case it was a terrifying story about a witch.
He quickly sat up when he heard someone entering his home, his parents were suppose to be out for the night so he got up and headed down the hall with his bat ready. He raised it above his head only to quickly drop it, scoffing when he saw it was just Simon and Kate. "What the hell?" He says, crossing his arms and Katie chuckled, walking over to the livingroom as Simon puts his arm around Marcus. "What were you doing with that bat?" He asked as he pointed to the metal bat on the floor.
"I thought you guys were intruders or something." He huffs and Simon smiled widely. "Or the witch?" He whispers and Marcus smacks him, then he pushed away Simon. "What are you two doing here?" He says, sitting onto the couch chair across from where Kate took her seat. "We need more of those... blueberries and bananas." She says and Marcus sighs, smiling faintly at the two before him.
"Uh, I could get them, yeah... I'll get them to you tomorrow." He says, nodding before he stood up. "Meet me in the girl's bathroom tomorrow." He says and Kate just smiles, nodding. "We'll be there. Right, Simon?" She glanced to the boy beside her who nods. "For sure. We'll see you there, Mar." Simon stood up and Marcus raised his hands.
"How the hell did you guys get in here anyway?" He says before crossing his arms. "Uh..." Kate stood up, looking at Simon who just glanced between them, unsure of what to say. "Kate picked the lock with her bobby pin." He simply rambled out and Marcus rolls his eyes. "Next time just ring the doorbell." He says and Simon shrugs. "I wanted to see if she could do it." He says and Marcus huffs softly.
"Whatever... I'll see you guys tomorrow." He repeated and Simon nods, nodding to Kate who just nods. "Let's go." She whispers and they head for the front door. Marcus then made some time to make a few calls afterwards.
