"Hey Jensen." I looked up from the clipboard at the unexpected greeting and Damien's smile came to view. I hesitantly grinned back.
"Oh, hi." I noted the last details Ramfire had asked me to and hold the clipboard closer to my chest with one arm as the other moved to the helmet when it shifted as I moved. The McFredrick heir stopped by my side out the way of the guys working on the wall separating section D. I was supposed to take note everything was going all smooth as Ramfire attended section C's last details. "What? Decided to drop by and play the boss?" I taunted gently, trying to break the ice, and my awkwardness melted when he grinned back.
"Need to check on my project from time to time."
"So thoughtful of you."
"Yes." Damien chuckled tugging almost unconsciously at the tie of his suit. "I'm actually having a meeting in an hour, either way so I won't be staying for long." he tapped his helmet eying the guys a few feet from us warily for a second before turning to me again and this time his voice sounded lower as he changed it into a more worried tone. "Hey, is there a reason why would your mother be calling mine all along yesterday?"
My blood froze and I could feel my heart halting for a horrible second before resuming it's hard beating rushedly. My palms began to sweat cold even with the heat of the summer day and the bussing in my hears started again. "Oh, um, she couldn't find me." I mumbled as easily as I could but my mouth was dry as hell and I could tell by the way he tilted his head I could tell that spiked his interest instead of solving the doubts. I gulped. "And since she knows we sometimes hang out..."
"I see." he hummed, saving me from elaborating a decent lie. "Is everything okay, then?"
"Yes," I forced out my most convincing smile, stepping away just in time to let one of the guys stepped inside the section carrying a few more wooden boars over his shoulder. It still amazed me the strength of this people. "Everything's okay, my phone died and she couldn't contact me."
I didn't know why I didn't tell him the truth. Guess a part of me wasn't ready to explain it to new people. My situation wasn't exactly something to be bragging about. An this was Damien. What would he think of me if he found out what a disappointment I was? Probably nothing good.
"Oh, okay then." he grinned eliciting part of my apprehension and glanced at his wrist watch with a gentle cuss. "I'm really sorry, but I need to get to the Mick Doland and discuss this new deal before five, that's when I'm heading to the meeting. Gotta fly."
"You're always so busy." I teased pushing his arm gently and he took my hand, bringing it softly to his mouth and taking me aback by how delicate the action was.
"That's my thing." he taunted back, kissing the back of my hand slowly before straightening his suit as I gawked. Not having expected that gesture my chest ached a little by its sweetness. "See you soon, Nova. Maybe we could have a dinner sometime?"
"T-that would be nice." I blushed at the stupid stuttering but I was too baffled. I also instantly overthink about the fact that I should be spending my savings on fancy dinners and expensive restaurants like the one he would chose but decided I would make up an excuse later. Now I waved as he exited towards the C section where he'd find my boss and I went back to fulfill a report on the advances here.
My sour mood kinda lifted at the unexpected affectioned move. I'd been on the edge ever since I arrived, my lack of sleep and constant stress shown and even Ramfire noticed. He gave me a weird look when I mix the samples as I apologized fixing it and waiting for the lecture to come. Yet he didn't yell. He didn't snap at me for being useless not for wasting his time, he frowned at me the whole time until I got it right and then let it go with a forceful intake of breath. If even him, the stone-heart-man, took pity of me, I must be at my worst for sure.
