Birthdays had never been a huge celebration for you.

Once you were past the point in which you could have playgroup parties with babies that you couldn't even communicate with, that was it. Unfortunately you never broke out of your shell at school, or even pre-school, always being the quiet kid who sat back and watched the world pass. No friends, so no birthday parties.

Sure you invited people to your party, but it was the showing up that people never quite managed to execute. Your favourite thing had always been writing the invitations anyways.

"Y/N, petal, you've got glue all over the kitchen table!" Your mum laughed at you. You were making birthday invitations for your 5th birthday party. It was going to be Disney themed and you were so excited when you saw Jungle Book and Lion King themed stickers in the supermarket one weekend. Your mum had bought them just to keep the happy smile on your face, explaining you could use them to decorate your invitations.

Your mum had written the key information for you, all you had to do was sign your name and the persons you were inviting, with the added bonus of going crazy with glitter and gel to decorate them nicely - not neatly.

"It's sticky mummy!" You giggled as you stuck and unstuck your hands to the table, laughing at the sound it was making.

You were on your last card, having completed 20 previously for all of your new classmates. There was now pink glitter all over the table, glued to your hands and even in your hair. A bath tonight was surely on the cards. The most important thing was that you were happy. Your mum didn't care that her kitchen table was a bomb sight, she was just happy to see a smile on your precious little face.

"Oh you are definitely your daddy's daughter!" Your mum laughed, you not really understanding what she meant but laughed along anyways.

The invitations were one of your proudest achievements - even still to this day. Even the envelopes had been decorated in pretty colours and cool stickers. All your classmates were sure to love them and now had something to look forwards to. Little 5 year old you couldn't have been more wrong.

"Mummy? Why is no one here yet?" You asked her, as you walked into the kitchen where everything had been set up for you.

Your kitchen table was glue-free, but not cake-free. The table had a plastic Disney cover over the top of it which then was the foundation for cakes, sausage rolls, quiches, jammie dodgers and pizza. The kitchen smelt marvellous and your dad was already sitting at the kitchen table eating a pork pie. Your birthday cake was a Disney castle and it looked fantastic - one that you couldn't wait to show your classmates.

The invitation had stated to be over at your house for 5pm, so at 5:45pm your small brain didn't understand why no one had showed up yet. Did you tell them the wrong day? Wrong time? Wrong address?

Your mum turned around from where she was washing some dishes, drying her hands before crouching down on the floor in front of you.

"Honey baby. I don't think they're coming, sweetheart." Your mum spoke softly, pushing strands of hair behind your ear. She watched your eyes widen and your lips pout with a slight tremor. A mother should never have to tell their child that no one RSPV'd to your invitations, and she never wanted you to find out.
