Chapter 2

That night I ended up in the middle of the woods at my old tree house, Sarah and I had built it with my mom before she died. I didn't realize that's where I was going until I reached the purple boards that were nailed to the trunk of the tree. 5 going up to create a ladder and one with a stick to stand in the ground as a sign that read: Banner and Riddle Residence. Riddle is Sarah's last name.

Old memories came rushing back as my fingertips brushed against the wooden floor. Sarah and I hadn't been back since the night my mom died and we had camped out there the entire night. It's funny what time can do to a person.

It's been 7 years since she died and now I'm figuring out that she didn't die in a car accident but she chose to die. Then, the accident happened a few months later. The accident that caused my dad to try and kill himself. The accident that caused my nightmares and so much more.

I sat underneath the small tree and held my knees to my chest as the numbness kicked in. I've felt a lot of physical pain before and a lot of mental pain but the pain of being lied to about something as big as this and learning that it wasn't an accident but abandonment.

It was all too much to take it. My system just wanted to give out and just as I closed my eyes to let it, the sound of a branch breaking made me shoot up straight.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." my dad said before he awkwardly sat next to me. His eyes were still red from tears.

"How'd you find me?" I asked as I snuggled into his side and he draped his arm around me.

"I figured you wouldn't go home because it's clear you don't really want to talk to me right now and you left Sarah in the conference room so you weren't going to her house," we giggled at that. "And since it was a mom thing, I figured you'd come here. Whenever your mom was brought up in conversation or you were just thinking about her, it always came back to this treehouse."

"Yeah." Was all I could say. I really didn't want to talk to or even be near anyone right now but I needed the warmth of my father's hugs. They always made me feel better. We sat there for about an hour, just pure silence. Not even the birds were chirping.

"Do you wanna stay here or go home?" he finally asked.

"I think we should stay here just a little longer. I still need time to think about the conversation ahead of us." I said, staring at the few summer leaves that had fallen from the tree branches above our heads.

"Okay." he said and we went back to sitting in silence.

Eventually, it started to get dark so we decided it best to go home. The car ride was still silent though. Neither of us talked until we made our way inside the house.

"Look," my dad spoke first. "we don't have to talk about everything today. We can wait until morning."

"Are saying that because to need more time or in case I need more time?" I asked, looking at the flame of a candle I had lit because I couldn't look at him yet.

"Both." he said.

"Then, yeah. Let's leave it for now." I said and walked to my room. Before opening the door, I turned back to look at him. "I love you, dad. Goodnight." I said and walked into my room softly shutting the door behind me.

A year later...

"Dad!" I called from the front doorway of our house. "Come on we're gonna be late!"

"I'm coming. I just need to find my keys." he said as he ascended down the stairs.

"In my hand. Now let's go!" I said as I dragged him out of the house and to the car.

"Why are you so excited to go to this anyway?" my dad asked.

"Uh...science?" I lied.

"No really, what is it?" he asked as he started the car.

"I can't really tell you." I said.

"Why not?" he asked. "It's a science show, it's not like you can do anything bad so, what is it?"

"It's-uh, well..."

"Okay, fine. Your dad's not cool enough to know about your teenage things and drama."

"No it's not that it's just..." I paused thinking quickly if I should tell him or not. "I...have a date."

"A date? Really?"

"Don't sound so surprised!" I said and pushed him playfully.

"I didn't mean it like that." he laughed. "So, what's her name?"

"L- wait, did you just say her name?" I asked confused, yet shocked at the same time.

"Yeah, why is it not a girl?" he asked.

"Well, yeah, but how do you know that? I mean I never told you that I was interested in girls like that." I questioned.

"It's pretty obvious, asteroid." he laughed.

"No, no asteroid! This is serious! How long have you known?" I asked.

"Uh, a few years now."

"A few years?! Dad, I've only figured this out with the past year." I explained.

"Really?" he asked. "Maybe it's just Father's intuition."

"Or maybe you know how to spot a fellow gay." I said under my breath.

"What'd you say?" he asked his voice sounding like he heard me but wasn't entirely sure.

"Oh, nothing." I said and stared out the window. "By the way, it's not just any science show. It's your science lecture."

"Yeah and everything I'm going to talk about, you already know because of the gamma rays gone haywire." he said.

"How could I forget? I have to wear colored contacts now so people don't see the yellows and blues." I laughed.

"You can always take them out."

"Thanks, dad, but I'd rather people not know about me just yet." I said and we got out of the car.

"Hey, I wanna meet this girl before the show."

"No can do, you're already late. Now go be a star."  I said and pushed him through the doors.
