It took a couple of weeks of gathering myself and placing all the memories together. But eventually I understood why my dad did what he did and why Sarah never said anything. And now, I was ready to go see him. For the first time in 7 years, where I actually remembered him anyway.

We arrived at the S.H.I.E.L.D. base and I quickly grabbed Wanda's hand and squeezed it nervously as we made our way towards the containment cells.

I stopped outside the doors and turned back to the rest of the team, they had all insisted on coming for "emotional support". Sarah had come too. She had known him just as well as I did and I didn't want to do this entirely alone.

"Can just Sarah and I go in?" I asked although I wasn't really going to take no for an answer.

"Yeah, of course." Natasha said and when Clint went to say something she stomped on his foot making him shout a exaggerated "ow". I placed a kiss on Wanda's cheek and let go of her hand slightly dreading it when I replaced it with the cold handle of the titanium prison door.

Sarah and I walked inside and the door clamped shut behind us made a loud noise that echoed through the silent hallway. There were many cells, most of which gone unoccupied but a couple were taken up by people who gave us hard glares. We reached the end of the hall and turned left to find a single cell that seemed to be much more comforting than the others. It had a light glowed bright from within the ceiling and a small bed in the corner with a blanket and a book on top, it was a lot more clean than the others. Alexander sat on the floor leaned up against the beds pedestal with a book in hand.

"Whatcha reading?" I asked. He jumped at the sound of my voice and quickly stood up.

"Nothing important." He said closing the book and tossing it onto the bed.

"Maximum...Ride." Sarah read from the cover.

"Y/n was always obsessed with these books. I decided to finally give them a chance a couple years ago. They're, uh, they're quite... interesting." He looked down at the ground and shuffled his feet.

"I'm sorry for not remembering you, Alex." I said. His head shot up at the nickname. "What?" I asked.

"Nothing. It's just, uh, no one...no one's called me Alex in...well, a long time." He said and I could see him resisting a smile. I could see the sadness behind his eyes and the tears that wanted to break but he shook his head and they were gone.

"Sorry, about the cell." Sarah said.

"Ah, no worries. I get it. I didn't exactly make a friendly entrance and I don't exactly look like I'm trying to sell girl scout cookies."

"Why did you make an entrance like that?" Sarah asked.

"Oh come on, you know me. I love a good show." He half laughed and gave a quick smile as he rubbed his hands, just like our dad did.

"You're lying." I said.

"No I'm not." He insisted.

"Yes you are." Sarah said.

There was a moment of silence before he finally stopped rubbing his hands. "Right, you two always were dad's human lie detectors."

"Only with you." I grinned.

"Look, these last 7 years haven't exactly been...easy. But they're are things you just won't understand."

"Like blowing up my car and kidnapping the girl I've been in love with in order to make a statement?" I asked.

"How'd you-"

"We had a sample of your DNA. Tony had it tested several times and compared to mine it was almost and exact match. I didn't really understand why at the time but when you helped jolted my memories back. I figured it out."

"Why didn't you tell anyone about that?" Sarah asked.

"What you want me to go tell my girlfriend that my brother kidnapped her and hurt her-"

"Actually, I didn't touch her. That was all Uncle. His area not mine." Alexander cut in, a sheepish look on his face.

"Not helping." Sarah said.

"Look, I just want to know why. My brother disappears for 7 years and I don't even know then suddenly he comes back and... you're not the same as before. Not that expect you to be."

"Y/n-"

"I know that you think I don't understand but I want to. At least give me the chance. Please."

"I'm gonna leave this between you two." Sarah said and walked towards the exit. There was silence until we heard the clank of the door shutting again.

"I can't tell you," he said. "I'm sorry, y/n. But I can't take anymore-" he stopped himself. "It's been 7 years of hell. And not a day has gone by where I haven't missed you or...dad." he hung his head and shook it like he had before.

"Do you know? About..." I trailed off.

"Yeah. Yeah, I know. I'm allowed to watch the news when it involves you."

"Allowed?" I asked. "Alex, what's going on? This...hell...that you've been in, are they the ones that took you? That day at the park?"

"Yeah."

"And that scar, on your face?" I asked. "Did they do that too?"

He looked at me, tears brimming his eyes. "You have to let me go, y/n. They're gonna come for me. You can't be here when they do. Please, I don't want you getting hurt too."

"Alex-"

"Please, y/n." He was much closer to the glass now, so close his breath fogged it.

"I can't leave you. I won't leave you again." I said and held up my thumb and pinky up and pressed them to the glass. "Remember this?"

He looked at me and hesitantly copied my actions. "Protect."

Then I removed my hand from the glass and traced an x over my heart with my index finger. After a second he did the same. "Family." he said.

"Always." I said.

"That's why you leave me no choice." His hand balled into a fist and he threw it back. As if in slow motion his fist came in contact with the glass and it shattered into a million pieces. "I'm sorry, y/n." He grabbed my arm and I was no longer in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s containment area. I was in my room and my head was spinning. I sat on my bed to regain myself then Wanda came rushing in.
