A loud thud rang throughout Death City, causing the lopsided buildings to tremble slightly. The blonde, pigtailed girl stood on the pavement motionless. Her feet cemented in place as her red, plaid skirt fluttered in the light, midnight breeze. "Did you hear that?" She asked, the words spilling out of her mouth without a hint of hesitation.
Footsteps, light, as if trying to be unnoticed began moving closer towards the pair, growing clunkier and heavier the closer they approached, sounding like someone who stumbled across the finish line after completing their one and only goal, finishing a marathon.
Soon, the footsteps slowly wore away, disappearing into the darkness of what seems to be just another typical, calm night. The white-haired boy stood aside from her with his hands folded across his chest, giving her a sharp grin as the moonlight reflected upon his bright, pearly whites.
"Yep. Even if I would've covered my ears, I'd hear the sound clearly. I smell..." He sniffed the air, allowing the smoky fumes to creep into his nose. "A Kishin soul. Those dumbasses really think they can simply flee away from us Meisters and Weapons. How stupid are they!?"
"They're stupider than Black Star trying to ace an exam. I should teach him my ways of studying, but he can sometimes be a real pain to Tsubaki." She replied. Her lustrous, emerald eyes returned the glance, giving him a slight smile after she did so. "You can sometimes be a pain to me as well, but partners have arguments once in awhile. Let's just get this Kishin out of Death City before it ends up striking again."
The crimson-eyed boy nodded in response, planting his focus onto the bricked stairs that led to the DWMA. Suddenly, a tearing noise, like a piece of fabric being ripped, was heard from the outskirts of the city, followed by a shrill scream. "I agree with you for once, Albarn. But it looks like that we're late from preventing the Kishin from touching another innocent soul. Enough with the chitchat. Let's get a move on!"
"Alright!" The girl nodded, a determined smile spreading across her face. Her cheeks are stained a faint shade of pink due to the cool, dry air. "I'll be waiting right here. You can take all the time you need, Soul. Just don't let the hands stop turning. That would be bad."
"It's going to take much more than that for my hands to stop turning. My blade doesn't rust easily, you know?" He stated with the smirk still present on his lips. A prickly sensation ran up his shoulder like thorns stabbing into a piece of flesh. Seconds later, a vibrant blade emerged from his shoulder, curving around his partner's waist like a claw. Two zig-zag-like structures ran down the length of the gleaming blade, ebony black meeting with blood red.
The handle fell into his partner's gloved hands, and she twirled him around as if he were as light as a feather. Her emerald green eyes narrowed as she attempted to pinpoint the Kishin's precise location. A few incoming breezes made her coat billow out slightly.
With that, she took off, her ash-blonde pigtails flying behind her as she grasped her weapon tightly in her hands. The soles of her shoes skimmed the asphalt, making little to no sound as she ran past the crooked, oddly-shaped abodes of Death City.
"Oi, Maka!" Her partner's reflection appeared on the shiny surface of her scythe. "Hurry up." She nodded, increasing her speed as she turned a corner, skidding herself into a halt once she finally confronted the Kishin.
The Kishin stood on top of a bricked stair as if it were a zombie. Its arms dangled off in front of its pallid stomach, swaying from side to side limply like deflated balloons with cheesy, black Halloween claws attached to the ends. It snorted, seemingly allowing the two get a full visualisation of its appearance as it towered above them on the flight of stairs.
"Gross.." Maka muttered, hefting her scythe as she resisted the urge to cringe. "Ready, Soul?"
The blade glinted, making her partner's face visible once more. Soul smirked, eyeing the Kishin while licking his lips. "Ready when you are, Maka!"
After she heard those words escape Soul's lips, she charged at the Kishin with lightning speed. Her emerald green eyes fired with determination as she slashed at the monster. The Kishin then swung one of its claws towards her direction, erupting with a loud clank as she obstructed his attempt for an attack.
"Too slow." Maka grinned as the gleaming blade swung downward, slicing off several of its limbs. It hissed aloud while the limbs fell onto the ground. The beast swiped at her with its remaining claws. A faint whooshing sound was heard as they tore through the relatively calm air. She narrowly dodged them, blocking each of the swipes with the snath of her scythe. The Kishin strained against her, but she sent it stumbling back with a kick.
The Kishin let out an abrupt gasp, flailing its arms wildly in the air as death itself awaited for him. Endless drops of black blood continued to trickle from its open wounds, each eventually falling to the pavement with a paintball-like appearance.
Soul clamped his bare hands together, grinning widely while his eyes aimlessly peered down towards the Kishin's body, watching its suffering like a child watching its favourite television show. "Great job, Maka!" He blurted aloud, keeping his focus planted onto the Kishin that laid ahead of him. "Now you just gotta whack it one last time! You have any idea how much dinner means to me at the moment?"
"S-sure I do!" Maka smiled faintly, dodging the Kishin's rapidly flailing limbs. "I wouldn't really recommend taunting the thing right now, by the way. Can't you see it's right in front of us?"
"Ah, why nag when you already know that it's going to die in the meantime? Let it enjoy itself."
"Can you do me a favor and make up your mind already, Soul!?" The blonde yelled in annoyance as she parried the Kishin's strikes. "Lord Death is waiting to hear from us, you know!"
"Fine, fine!" He snapped in turn. "Just kill the thing so I can EAT, Maka!"
With that, Maka swung the scythe's gleaming blade once more, slicing the Kishin clean in half.
Dinner was served.
