My eyes grew heavy with sorrow and I shrank to the floor collapsing from exhaustion. This need to fight became so overwhelming I was sure if I could keep up with it. This mess was so tangled and dreaded together that I couldn't fathom figuring things out.

I thought about sixth grade algebra and Mrs. Rush teaching our hungry minds. She was a very nice lady. Quiet and polite. She had shoulder length blonde hair and clear blue eyes. She was neither overly pretty nor was she homely. She use to wear simple clothing and she would talk to us in a way other adults didn't. She spoke as if she respected us highly.

The rumors of Sir came around in a waves. Sir was second in line to our Great Leader. It was well known that Sir wanted to be Leader but it was not his place. It started small, more of a challenge really. Kind of like when we use to play HORSE in basketball to see which one was the better athlete. Of course you always won just like of course Great Leader always won.

Sir declared that Great Leader didn't want us to have Love anymore. He spoke lies about how Great Leader was keeping all the Love for himself. Of course this was ludicrous and at first no one believed Sir but maybe a handful of conspiracy theorists.

The more Sir prattled on though and the longer he was in the spotlight, the more people would begin to rationalize in their heads. It was crazy but sometimes Sir would make a point that was hard to refute on the spot, especially if you were weak in your ministry.

Mrs. Rush was always giving away her Spirit of Wisdom and therefore would often need to fellowship in her ministry to be recharged. I remember the week she was taken was Spirit Week and everyone was so busy and immersed in giving away as much of their Spirit as possible. She seemed extra frail at school teaching us how to find the value of x.

I had been scribbling down notes while listening to her talk when she immediately stopped. I looked up to watch the piece of chalk fall to the ground where she once stood. She was just gone. We looked at each other as frightened children not sure of what we ought to do next.

I remember Sir slithering in a moment later letting us know Mrs. Rush had been given some time off to be questioned about her beliefs. They were giving everyone a trial to see just where their alliance lied.

Mrs. Rush was weak in her beliefs but strong enough that we later found out she died fighting.

And that's what continued to happen, people would disappear and be put in a trial. To leave the trial meant you became a Devotee. If you stayed true to Great Leader though, you were put to what the adults called "sleep". I wrestled with this for a long time. I didn't want to go into the trial because I didn't know where I would end up.

It looked like I was about to find out.
