It was the silence that woke me up. I had been so use to hearing fighting all the time that the silence frightened me. It was cold and dark, I remember noticing even the moon had left us. I lit a candle and made my way down the halls into the common room.
It was only you standing at the window looking up at nothing, your shoulders heavy though with the worlds burdens. I walked close to you with questions braced on my lips but you turned around and held a finger up to your lips with a smile.
I followed your finger as you pointed outside. There I saw large piles of lumps in our yard where fallen family members laid buried.
"One day, we'll be in there with them" you said with such conviction I wanted to join them then but my fear held me back.
I looked out into the night with the eerie silence covering us in her mist, whispering sweet nothings into our ears. You put an arm around my shoulder and we waited as the distinct sound of horse hoofs echoed out in the abyss. Tears welled in my eyes as I knew the sound meant it was time to take arms once again.
With my head held low I turned and walked to the door as it opened for me out of politeness. You followed behind me and we stood at the front of our home.
There were only six Halcyons left. The rest were either missing, dead, or worse. The rebels called themselves The Devotion. They decided we should all stop fighting for joy, wisdom, peace, and truth and only follow our hearts in Love. However; Halcyon, the heart is deceitful above all things. Who can understand it? Many good intentions bring about harm.
We stood waiting for the horses to appear. Devotion wore all red. They had even painted their horses red. Most of them were so thin from the over use of Love they looked more like red shadows than people.
I held my hand out as the gold glitter of fire began to form in my palm. With each tic of a second I could hear each prance of a hoof hitting the ground. I held my hand to my mouth and blew the Spirit of Joy from me scaring the horses ahead.
We could hear the startling cries of men and women trying to calm their horses down. I blew another spirit quickly this time hitting a tree and knocking it down in their path. I could see the figures jump off their horses and begin the run towards us.
Without warning a red fire surrounded us burning passionately. I looked to you for help but you just began to laugh manically. I shook you but that made you laugh harder.
Gathering spirit in your hand you threw it in the air and let it rain down like a firework. Each drop hitting a pursuer and throwing them to the ground. You began to laugh with delight as if it were a game to you. Again and again you threw the spirit of joy up and let it drop on our attackers until they ran off your face bright with Joy and pure innocence only found in children.
"One day we will join them but not tonight." You whispered in my ear. You rummaged your hand I on top of my head and through my hair and then I watched you walk back inside our home. I stayed to put the fire out with dirt until I ran back inside.
You were in your room with the door closed so I opened it with care. I could hear you crying and I didn't want you to know I was listening. You are my hero, my strong hero, and I couldn't take you so hurt.
I left you that night and I realize now I shouldn't have. That night is the night I lost you forever and I'm sorry. I should have been someone you could lean on too, I know this now.
It can't be too late though, please, forgive me, Halcyon.
Remember me.
