There was a day that came quicker than an early winters frost. You and I were huddled by the fire trying to stay warm. Artemis, our brother, passed around a basket with cooked fish in it that we caught that morning. His eyebrows were knit in concentration and his mouth set firm. We were all dirty from battle.

The moon was red that night glistening on the lake. The Stars were all out and the sky blazed in fire. The Joy Spirit was not used as much in these times. We have to savor Joy as much as we could. Joy was fragile and since there were so few of us it was hard to pass Joy into each other and have time to recharge and be given Joy ourselves.

You stood first, always alert and on your feet. Miyoko raised slowly off the ground attentive of her surroundings. I watched as the rest of Halcyons followed suit each getting ready with the Joy Spirit deep in their souls.

The trees began to fall from the sky. All the stars were going out one by one and I was scared. I was scared and you were calm. You smiled watching each light go out. Turning in circles you watched and the trees fell and the flowers died. The snow died. The water turned black and thick with sludge.

I stayed on the ground holding earth in my hands as a way to prolong its life. Wind laughed at us and jabbed us harshly, tossing us around like waves in an ocean.

Red eyes appeared from the darkness. Men and women dressed in red robes with red flaming hair. I watched as they came with purpose. Miyoko ran after them charged with Joy, throwing the spirit into them. Few Devotions fell, some I could see were too weak to let Love go free and so instead they killed themselves. Only one could I see change back into their original form. The red slowly disintegrating out of them and into the ground. I saw as the color came back to them, their original form as a Sapience. I reached out to take their hand in their confused state, to pass on my Joy to them to help them be strong but a Devotion stepped in between us and placed their hand on the Sapience forehead. They blasted the Sapience with so much love the Sapience began to shake uncontrollably from pleasure. Blood began to spout from their eyes and nose. They coughed out blood and then they stopped. They were completely still with no life in them.

The hand on the back of my neck was rough and calloused. It wrapped it's fingers around me and squeezed until I choked out a cough, saliva running down my chin. I looked up and saw a bright light were the aura of the moon lit the Devotions head. I was being lifted up and slammed on the ground, my stomach crushing into the stones. I spat out the metallic taste of blood as hair got caught inside my mouth. I curled into a ball trying to ignore the pain but it washed over me. The Devotion raised me again and threw me at a fallen tree. I fell into the tree on my side and watched as the Devotion charged at me and raised me again but this time squeezing my throat. I clawed at his hands as his nails dug into me. I kicked at nothing and scratch at his face. His eyes glowed with pleasure seekers.

I felt him overwhelm me with Love. My heart raced and I could hear the throbbing in my ears. Suddenly life was delicious. I craved for it. I bit my bottom lip and squirmed as the Love began to take over me. He smiled and then kissed me hard and my body began to run with electricity shooting everywhere. It was too much and I wanted more, needed more. The thirst was too heavy and I wrapped my body around him pulling him closer to me. I wanted to take all of his Love for myself. I needed more.

I was weak. I was scared. I was never so ashamed as I was in that moment.

My nails began to turn red, the tips of my hair pink at first and then deep Crimson. I felt the laughter erupt from deep below me and then sobs that took control of my mind. It became a losing battle to stay above the surface as I drowned in all the pleasures of love at once. Like a swimmer in the ocean full well knowing sharks infested the waters, I stayed waiting for a shark to smell my blood and fear and to finally swallow me whole.

I fell to my knees screaming half out of ecstasy the other half out of fear and revulsion. Placing my hands on my cheeks over stimulated my body and tears stung the corners of my eyes as I did not want to give the love away even though I could feel it controlling me.

The Devotion circled around me cheering me on to complete the change. I looked at you as you laid on the ground crushed under the foot of a Devotion, forced to watch. You screamed for me to remember. You screamed for me to be strong and to fight. You screamed my name over and over and over and over again. It became so manic that spit flew from your mouth and snot down your nose. Tears streaked your cheeks mixing with dirt and sweat.

I saw you. And then, I saw nothing.
