Eighteen

The stench of death hung in my nostrils. I squirmed in discomfort as I led my soldiers into deaths open arms. Some were lucky and died before their foot touched the ground, struck down from Love failing from the air. We quickly scattered and I looked back to see a few huddled on the grass holding their fallen comrades with their faces buried into their dirt streaked hair.

Some warriors ran into the battle. They may have gotten a few Devotions but ultimately they rushed in so fast they were caught off guard. I watched them suffer and die.

There was nothing holding the Devotion back, they were hungry for blood and they attacked us ripping through our skin with their sharp teeth. Few people could use their craft at them. It was a bloodbath.

The Devotion were not changing anyone to their side, they were just slaughtering us now.

I looked up at the sky as red spilled out over it. Deep red pouring it's soul into the sky and painting the clouds black. Fire rippled through like waves in the ocean. There was no where to hide now.

I was scared. I rushed into this all wrong. I was so angry and prideful that it got the best of me. I could see that now at the expense of others lives. I was doing this for you though. I couldn't bear the thought that I had lost you forever. You had to be out there somewhere. This was my bargaining chip. This was my leverage to use. If I could save this world from Sir, maybe they'd return you back to me. I needed you so much. I could never see another day without you by my side. You are my family, my everything. There is nothing I wouldn't do to get you back.

"Tag you're it!" You screamed running away.

"No fair! I just tagged you!" I whined jogging where I had last seen you.

You ran into a shed behind the house. It was a creepy old shed that was falling a part. I hated that old thing and you knew I didn't like going in there.

"Come on! The sheds off limits! You're cheating!" I screamed from the doorway.

I slowly opened the door to the shed letting it creak from its lack of use. I peered inside to see if maybe I could spot you. There was a light bulb hanging down in the middle of the ceiling. I rushed to it pulling the string down to turn the bulb on.

I shivered and looked around trying to see where you were hiding. Dust covered all the shelves, books, and other alien objects I couldn't give names to. There was an old hybrid sitting in the shed from generations past. The hybrid sat still motionless. One time it use to get us everywhere but hybrids are no longer needed with the use of the omegas that now get us from point a to point b.

"This place is creepy! I'm leaving you in here!" I yelled.

I began to pull the string down to turn off the light when I heard rustling under a box. I sucked in breath thinking you were probably playing a prank on me. I wasn't going to let you scare me this time though. I walked over to the box slowly ready for you to pounce out. I reached out my hand to move the box yanking it back quickly.

"Gotcha!" I taunted.

A body leapt at me with all its force. I could feel teeth sinking into my neck. I screamed in horror as I realized it was one of the first Devotion. I tried to throw it off of me but it was so strong. I screamed for help but I could feel my life being drained away. Suddenly you sprinted into the room clobbering the Devotion until it's head split open and blood gushed out of it. It squealed in pain falling on its back as you kept clubbing it with a plank of wood.

You threw the plank down across the room gasping for air. You looked at me with blood splashed on your face dripping down like sweat. I held my shoulder where that thing had bit me. We didn't talk, you just walked out of the shed and I followed you close behind.

We had a bonfire that night using the Devotion as fuel for the flames. You said we had to burn the body, otherwise other Devotion would try to get whatever was left of it. I sat there letting the flames lick my face. You sat next to me putting your arm around my shoulders and pulling me close as I began to cry.

I had never seen a Devotion before. I knew they were out there but I had never actually seen what one looked like. It was like the bogey man with no face. I could almost believe that they were stories people made up to keep kids in place. I knew you went out hunting for them with Miyoko all the time but now...

"They're evil." You said breaking the silence, "They don't even know they're evil. That's the worse part."

"How does one not know they're evil?" I asked

"They think they're doing what's right." I looked at you puzzled. You stared into the fire like an old friend.

"Do you think you are doing right?" I asked.

"I will always do what is best to keep you safe. I will never be stupid though and think that everything I do is right."

"Would you ever join them?"

You looked at me then lifting my gaze to meet yours. You looked so serious in that moment, "I could never leave you. Ever. You got that? I love you. You are my family and nothing can ever take that away."

You promised me that night you would never fight for the Devotion. So why was I staring at you wearing all red with blood on your lips?
