"It's weird for me," I told Madison, "I'm not used to this."
Madison and I were at our playground that Wednesday afternoon; the playground where we spent most of our childhood.
I hung upside down on the monkeybars and Madison sat in a swing with her legs crossed, listening to what I had to say.
I had told her I liked Thomas - reluctantly - after she asked me about it and didn't stop persisting until I finally confessed.
"I only like him a little," I had said, "I think. I don't really know."
"How do you not know?"
"I mean... I don't really like guys."
"But you're around them all the time."
"I don't like like them though," I explained, "as friends, best friends, even, but it's never been like this."
"You're telling me," she said, pointing a finger, "that you've never liked a boy?"
I shrugged and swung down from the monkey bars. My newly washed hair was now a mess.
"No, I haven't."
"You've never had a teeny tiny crush on anybody before?"
I shook my head.
"You've never liked anybody."
"No."
"How did you go fifteen years without liking a boy?"
I shrugged. "They're my friends, I guess."
She thumped my head. "Dweeb."
I giggled. I slouched into a swing and began to pump my legs. I felt like a little kid doing this, and it was kind of refreshing.
Peering over Madison's shoulder, I could see Melissa ride up on her bike.
"Hey, Mel," I shouted.
She waved and ran a hand through her gorgeous hair.
Melissa has been getting a lot closer to Madison and I. I really liked her, she was cool. She had the same mindset as me, the same view on life.
"Hey, ladies," she said, climbing up and sitting on the monkey bars.
I joined her. "How's King residence?"
She shrugged. "Boring."
"Why do you guys like the monkey bars so much?" Madison whined.
Madison didn't like the monkey bars.
"Sorry, Mads," I said.
We watched the skaters on the ramp. Jake, Max, and Thomas were all fooling around.
Thomas executed a clean 360.
"He likes you," Melissa said.
I turned to her, trying to act casual. "What?"
