"Almost done," Melissa said.

"Hold still, Jos," Madison told me, "stop moving. You're making me mess up."

Madison and Melissa insisted on doing my hair and makeup, because they were convinced that I would look like a superstar.

I mean, you know what, I didn't really give a crap.

"And... done!"

They turned me around in the chair.

"Woah."

I looked really different. I mean, different in a good way.

I looked kinda hot, not to be conceited.

They straightened my hair, making it kinda puffy but it worked. I had pink eyeshadow and dark eyeliner that wasn't too much but that added a little extra. They put on mascara and powder and blush and super super bright pink lipstick and wiped a little off, making it more of a stain. It looked more natural that way.

"You look awesome," Madison said, "seriously."

Melissa smiled. "Wanna go hang out by the pool now?"

"We should!" Madison said.

I looked at them. "Why?"

"You should show Thomas!"

I rolled my eyes. "I don't like him you guys! We're just friends."

"Whenever people say that," Melissa said, "it always means they like whoever they're talking about. Let's be serious. You're in love with my brother."

I gave her a look. "No, I'm definitely not in love with your brother."

"Fine," she said, "but that doesn't mean we can't go hang out by the pool, right?"

I slipped on one of Melissa's bathing suits.

"You look great in that bathing suit! Thomas will die," Melissa told me.

I walked past them and heard them giggling.

"Thomas isn't gonna care, you wanna know why? We're friends, not crushes, not boyfriend/girlfriend, nothing!"

We walked into the kitchen. Jake, Max, and Thomas were standing around or sitting on the counter sipping coke.

I wanted to lay low so that none of them would see me. They would make fun of me, for sure.

"Hey, boys," Madison said, and, conveniently, both of them moved out of the way so that I was in full view of the boys.

Jake's eyes widened. Max choked on his coke.

"Woah," Thomas said.

I tried to play it off. "Gimme a coke, Jake."

Jake didn't move. He sat with this surprised look on his face.

"Jake!"

He snapped back into reality. "Oh, uh, yeah."

I snapped it open and walked outside. They followed.

"You look like a babe!" Max said.

"Max, shut up."

"Seriously, what happened to you?"
