"Haha!" I laughed, "noob!"
Jake was covered in flour.
I high fived Thomas.
In my neighborhood for the past, I don't know, 15 years or so, we've had this ongoing prank war. The whole idea was to prank someone every once in a while, but it had to be a really good prank.
Thomas and I sat on the roof that morning and filled up two buckets to dump onto Jake: one filled with flour and one filled with water.
We were successful.
Jake wiped flour off his face. "I hate you, Josie!"
I laughed. "That's what you get for putting pink dye in my shampoo."
He snorted. "That wasn't me."
"Yes it was."
"Whatever. I'm gonna get you back, Josie."
I shrugged. "Okay."
We climbed down from the roof and I checked my watch. It was dinnertime.
"I have to go," Thomas muttered to me, and I saw his mom standing in the doorway of their house.
"Bye, have a fabulous dinner," I joked.
He smiled and kissed my cheek.
Charlotte made steaks for Jake and I that night. We ate on trays in front of the TV so that we could watch our favorite show, Dancing With the Stars.
Even though I hated all the judges and half the stars were awful dancers, we were somehow addicted to watching it every Monday and Tuesday.
We heard a loud knock on the back door.
"I'll get it," I announced.
I opened the door to see Melissa, Kasey, and Thomas.
They looked mad.
Lisa was behind them. "Can we at least talk about this?"
"No," Thomas answered harshly.
"Can we come in, Josie?" Melissa asked.
Kasey had tears running down her face and was in Melissa's arms.
"Yeah," I said, "of course."
Lisa followed them. She looked desperate.
Mark was also behind them, looking ashamed, sad, and guilty.
"What's going on?" Charlotte asked.
Thomas wouldn't catch my eye.
"What's wrong?" I asked him.
"Mark," Lisa started, "is being relocated again."
I couldn't breathe.
"We're moving back to Tuscaloosa."
My eyes widened. I bit my lip. Tears filled my eyes.
"What do you mean, you're moving?" Jake asked, "You can't move."
"We have to," Melissa said, looking angrily over at her parents, "because Mark can't find another job here, he just has to keep his old one."
Mark spoke up. "I'm doing this for us, Mel. This will help us."
She looked at him. "How the hell will this help us?"
Lisa put a hand on her shoulder. "Melissa-"
"Shut up, mom. I don't care about you. I'm staying here."
"Me too," Thomas said.
"Me three," agreed Kasey.
"This isn't your decision," Mark said, a little harder.
"I'll be 18 soon," Melissa said, "then I can move wherever I want."
"You're not 18 yet," Lisa said, "which means you're staying with your family."
"Find another job!" Thomas said, "Please!"
"No," said Mark, "it's final."
"Why?" Kasey begged.
His eyes softened. Not that I would blame him. Kasey looked like a kid who could get whatever she wanted if she really tried.
I gulped.
"Because we have to. Start packing tomorrow morning."
He walked out.
Even Lisa looked upset. She put a hand on her forehead.
Nobody spoke. Not that there was really anything to say.
I had to get away from this. I would cry any minute.
"I'm going on a walk," I said quietly.
I walked out and ran to my tree.
Max sat perched in a branch.
"Oh, hey, Jos."
I climbed up and sat with him.
"What's up?"
I sniffed.
Neither of us moved.
He knew I was sad. And he knew just how to handle it.
We didn't say anything for a while.
"The King's are moving."
He snapped his head in my direction. "What?"
"Mark got relocated."
He breathed.
"Man."
"Yeah."
"I'm gonna miss them."
I felt a tear roll down my cheek.
"Me too."
