MARCH 1943

"Elaine, the head nurse just asked about you, she called you into her office." Jolene said to me, while I was folding up my scrubs.

Head nurse Carroway was quite intimidating, you rather not get on her bad side.
Somehow she found a liking in Elaine, which made her work a little easier.

Elaine closed up her locker and rushed to the end of the hall of St. Albertines hospital, where Susan Carroway's office was located.

A few swift knocks to the massive wooden door and I waited for nurse Carroway's permission to enter.
A few steadying breaths later, I entered the small office space, which was sparingly furnished. No personal touches, just a few diplomas, displaying the achievements Susan Carroway had gotten in her lifetime as a nurse.

"Elaine, good to see you. Please have a seat." Susan said gesturing Elaine to sit on the chair in front of her.
"I got a message from Colonel Phillips, asking me to send in a couple nurses because they are short staffed. I'm gonna send you and Jolene. You get the chance to pack up your bags tomorrow and tomorrow night, a car is gonna come pick you up. Is that all right with you, Elaine ?" she said, her tone firm and but assertive.

I couldn't help but nod. I was gonna be sent to the front lines to help out fallen and injured soldiers. It was an honour to work with all these courageous men in a fight against evil. And her best friend Jolene would be joining her.

''If you have no questions left, you are excused, Elaine.''

I nodded, a silent ''thank you, ma'am'' and left the room closing the door behind me.

ARRIVAL AT THE 107TH // LATHAM, NEW YORK

Colonel Chester Phillips stood in front of his tent. Tall, grumpy looking man. I had a feeling him and nurse Carroway would get along well.

Jolene and I had arrived at the infantry this morning, after a about 3 hour drive. Swiftly putting away our bags and donning our work uniforms. My best friend Jolene looked at me, her soft features, small button nose, hazel eyes with little green flecks. She had that twinkle about her. Her smile could make someone's day better. I had met Jolene in high school, her classical beauty intimidated me at first but she had a heart of gold and was there when times were tough.

"Colonel Phillips, Jolene Masterson and Elaine Ruby Brubaker. We were sent by Susan Carroway from St. Albertine's Hospital in Rochester." Jolene said, putting on her sweetest smile.
Colonel Phillips just grunted and ordered Jolene to set up in the medical tent.
Quickly, Jolene gave me a hug, mouthed a 'see you later and hurried away to the medical tent.

"For you, Miss Brubaker, I have a special assignment. Dr. Erskine needs your help in the enlistment office. When you're done with helping him, you go back to medical." Without a single reaction in his face he dismissed me.
A soldier was ordered to take me to Dr. Erskine.

I arrived at the enlistment office where a short man with a balding grey head of hair, a five o'clock shadow, and round glasses was standing in front of a dark wooden desk, bent over a file, a concerned look on his face.

"Ah, you must be Miss Brubaker. I'm Dr. Abraham Erskine." he said with a thick foreign accent. My guess was german.

I reached to his outstretched hand to give him a handshake. His skin felt cold, papery, almost weathered.

"Dr. Erskine, a pleasure to meet you. What do you need help with ?" I asked him.

"I have this file here for Steven Grant Rogers he's been trying to enlist multiple times, falsifying his birthplace. I want you to check him up and then call me when you're done." he said, gathered the papers and put them back into the cream coloured file and held them out to me to grab them.
