With the first rays of sun streaming through our window, I carefully swung my legs over the edge of the bed, not wanting to wake Elaine up.
I grabbed a pair of sweat pants, a shirt and my leather jacket.
I wanted to go for a run outside of the city. On my way out I grabbed a pen and paper and left Elaine a little note.

I decided it would be easier to take my bike.

I drove up to the outskirts of town, where it was quiet in the early morning.

As much as I enjoyed being around the ones I love, I sometimes needed some peace and silence.

That silence was interrupted by a constant meowing coming from a distance.

A cat ?

I decided to venture further up the hill to see if the animal was hurt.

Between a few branches and bushes, curled up and scared lay a little white kitten.

Her different colored eyes widened as she saw me but she didn't move.

I slowly approached, trying so hard not to scare her away.

"Hey, little one." I whispered as I slowly crouched down to pick her up.
Her bright blue eyes stared at me.
Her white fur so pure, almost glowing in the early morning sun.

I carefully laid her into my half open leather jacket, her little head poking out curiously.

Before I started my bike I looked up the number of the local shelter to see if they had gotten news about a missing cat. She was wearing no collar. Maybe she was a stray ?

Since it was too early to go to the vet, I carefully swung myself on my bike and made my way to the nearest convenience store to see if I could pick up some cat food and we probably had some milk in the fridge.

I don't know if Tony would allow any pets at the compound but then again we had Sam.

I chuckled at the thought.

Off the highway, I took the next exit that lead to the compound.

My phone ringed as I was putting my bike in the garage.

It was the shelter.

"Mr. Barnes, thank you for calling. Would you mind coming in in the next hour or so? So we can check on the kitten to see if she has been chipped. We also have a vet on call who could come by and check her out." the lady on the phone said.

"I gotta check with my wife but we would be willing to keep her if the owner doesn't show up." I said to her.

Wife. That had a nice ring to it. Once the hype around Steve and Natasha  getting married was settled, I would finally propose to my beautiful Elaine.

"Alright, Mr. Barnes. I'll get your papers ready as soon as we looked at her. You can either come in this morning or later today. Until then, Mr. Barnes."

"Thank you. I will come in soon. Bye."

I took the kitten into the kitchen to get her some milk.

I heard footsteps coming towards me.

I poked my head around the corner to see Sam coming in, rubbing his eyes.

"Morning cyborg." He brushed past me.

"Woah, is that a kitten ? Where did you get it ?" Sam crouched down to the kitten who was happily drinking up her milk.
Sam slowly petted her, smiling as she purred peacefully.
