Four year old Sammie Evans looked through the railing on the play structure at the boy who was digging in the sand with an orange shovel below her. He had brown hair that was currently covered in sand and piercing green eyes that were very focused on filling his matching orange bucket.
Getting bored of watching him and his very repetitive task, she slid down the slide and ran over to where her mother sat on the bench with her pet cat, Clifford Atticus Dominic Richardson III. Her red sundress swished around her ankles when she crouched down to say hello to her friend. "Hello Cliff!" She smiled at him and pet him a few times, avoiding the harness that was on his back.
"Sammie, sweetie, why don't you take the leash and walk him around a bit? I'm sure he'd enjoy that," her mom suggested.
Happily agreeing, Sammie grabbed the leash and led Clifford Atticus Dominic Richardson III around the park.
Then, the boy from earlier came up to her. "Woah, is that your cat?" he asked. "He's so stellar! That's a word that means really really great, by the way. My mom taught it to me yesterday."
Sammie, of course, being the genius child she was, already knew what the word 'stellar' meant, but she decided not to comment on it. "Thanks," she said.
He turned around and ran away towards the parking lot where he met up with a woman who must have been his mom. Sammie watched his mom help him get into a green Kia Soul; she knew that's what car it was because it was written on the back, and four year old Sammie Evans was the best reader in her class.
Suddenly, a squirrel dashed in front of Clifford Atticus Dominic Richardson III and he dove for it. The leash snapped at that moment, and the cat dashed to chase the squirrel behind the car that the boy and his mother had just climbed into.
Sammie watched in horror as the car wheel slowly crushed her beloved cat's neck. And as quickly as that evil vehicle came, it left, leaving a broken cat and a broken soul in its wake. Sammie ran towards where her cat lay dying on the pavement. "Clifford Atticus Dominic Richardson III!" she cried. She cradled his mangled head in her hands and watched the light fade out of his eyes. With teary eyes, she looked up at the car that was driving away. She quickly memorized the sequence of numbers and letters on the licence plate, vowing to get revenge on the woman that killed her cat, and the boy who got into that car with her.
