Songs for this chapter: Everybody Talks - Neon Trees

The second I heard my alarm clock this morning I knew it was going to be a long day. I groaned, attempting to muffle the sound by huddling further beneath my warm covers and smushing my face into the fluffy pillows. Five minutes later, I decided that I could no longer tolerate the awful noise. I rolled out of bed unwillingly to check the time. Shoot! It was already 8:00 am!
I jumped out of bed and started getting ready right away. I can't be late, especially not today. I nearly had a heart attack when I glanced in the mirror. Why was I cursed with such horrible bedhead?? I ran my fingers through the bird nest on top of my head, attempting to untangle the mess, when I heard my mom yell from downstairs.
"Sammie! Breakfast's ready!" she said, as I took one last look at my outfit - a white button up, with a black 50s floral halter top swing dress over top, a red overcoat and some tennis shoes - before running to go grab something to eat.
My mom had prepared a large pancake breakfast for my first day, but since I was running late, I only had time to take a banana before saying my goodbyes and racing out the door. I ate my banana while walking to the bus stop to meet my friends, like we'd done since the first day of middle school.
"Hey Sammie!" said Beatrice, my best friend since kindergarten.
"I love your outfit!" said Halley, one of my other friends, "you're looking great for a dreary Monday." Today Halley's hair was long and blonde and she was wearing a pastel tie dye dress. Normally we would all meet up and walk to school together, but starting this year, I'd have to find new friends to commute with.
We said our goodbyes and I got on the bus as they started walking away. You're probably wondering what makes today different from all other days. Well, today is my first day of high school, and I'm going to a different school than all of my friends. You see, last year I applied to an art school just to see if I would be accepted into the literature program. I never expected to make it, but I actually got in! I'm excited to get this new opportunity since I aspire to be a writer, but I don't know anyone who goes to this school. I'm worried about fitting in and making friends. high school is tough enough, and I'm making it a whole lot more difficult for myself.
Just as I finished a chapter I was reading from my book, the bus pulled up to the school. I got off the bus and started to walk towards the big doors, passing other freshmen who were meeting up with friends they knew from middle school. I took a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic butterflies in my stomach, and opened the door.
