Today was the day. Today was the day
Clementine was going to do something she'd never thought she'd do. She stared down at the bent metal in front of her, the initial 'L' being stamped into the ring. She looked down to the other ring, this one being painted gold, the initial 'C' being stamped into it. She pocketed the gold ring, letting the silver one rest in her palm a bit longer.
"Here's what you requested Clem." Willy came into her room, completely unannounced. It slightly annoyed her how often Willy came in without knocking. That was a conversation for later as she grabbed the small box from Willies hand. She fidgeted with the box, seeing blood dipped in on the side of it, barely showing due to the dark purple velvet on the outside. "I didn't actually think you'd find this, thank you, Willy a lot. Also, thanks for making the rings, you got yourself an extra day off on chores."
Willy showed off a toothy smile, putting his hands on his hips with pride. "No problem. If you ever need 'Willies Pimpin and Simpin' services, I'm always 5 dorms away!" Willy left before Clementine could even say anything about the ridiculous name. She playfully rolled her eyes, her stomach filling with butterflies once more.

Clementine walked out to the courtyard, dusk was just hitting and the sky mixed with purple and orange colors. She felt the October breeze hit her bare arms. It reminded her that her birthday was coming up. Hitting 22 was something that her 11 year old self thought she would never hit after Lee died, she'd thought she would have died out there without him. She smiled, knowing Lee, Kenny and everyone else was watching down on her with pride.
"Hey goofball, what are you reading?" Clementine sat next to AJ, who sat with a news paper in his hand. AJ groaned in response. "Clem, I'm big now. You can't just call me that." Clementine rolled her eyes with a smile, "You're only 10." - "Going on 11 in December." AJ says proudly. "-but I'm reading about stuff from before you know when everyone here was little." Clementine looked down to the news paper, showcasing 9/11, something that happened two years before the apocalypse started. Clementine was around 6 when it happened. She didn't remember it affecting her much but it affected her parents a lot. She watched them comfort each other on their living room couch, watching the buildings collapse.
"Louis wasn't lying when he said the world before this one was shitty." AJ said, flipping the pages, now showing articles about pizza, but then the next article about police brutality against people of color, and hate crimes against the LGBT.
"Why would anyone care about who you love or what you look like?" AJ asked, now looking at the paper in his hand with admiration, distracted by the big steak ad. "People had different priorities back then I guess. Sometimes I'd walk around the store with my dad, and this random white person would come by and accuse him of stealing me. I was a lot lighter skin tone then him." Clementine shrugged the memory off— AJ twisting his mouth to the side. "That's dumb." AJ folded the paper back up. "I'm gonna go give this back to Aasim Clem." Clementine nodded, waving AJ off.
Just then she felt two lanky arms slide under her chest, she looked down to see the two long sleeved arms. The black ratted material giving off who it was. She looked up to him, Louis kissed her in a way of starting an introduction. "Hi." Is all he said, making her smile. Simple moments like these were her favorites. "Hey." She responded. He let her go, sitting next to her now.
"We captured only 4 fishes today but- we got a new trap set up and Aasim said he found two rabbits mating-" Louis wiggled his eyebrows, making Clementine chuckle and punching him softly. He pretends to be hurt, holding his arm and pouting. "-So we should look forward to a lot of Rabbits soon." He finishes. "Good. Lord knows we need some meat here, to really fill us up. Especially Ruby since she's pregnant." Louis looked over to Clementine with a saddened expression. She'd put on some weight from when she first got here 5 years ago, a healthy amount. She was really skinny, her jacket and all the layers just covered how really skinny she was. He was happy to see that she gained a normal amount of weight but, ever since the pregnancy reveal, she'd been giving Ruby her meals, and when she'd eat her own meals she'd barely do so because of the stress.
"Clementine, you're eating tonight's dinner." Louis' face was stern when she looked over to him. "But Ruby is pregnant Louis, and our rations have been low. We need to make sure she's ok first." Louis nodded, "Ok, but you're still eating." Clementine twisted her face, Louis' demeanor becoming more joyful. He booped her nose, it startling her. "What-"—"You're doing that nose scrunch thing again." Clementine sighed. "Is it that obvious?" Louis got up, seeing Omar struggle with the bowls, he kissed Clementine a goodbye, "You're to cute when you do that."
——
"Compliments to the chef!" Louis kissed his finger tips, throwing them in the air dramatically. Clementine watched her boyfriend be silly, but that didn't subside the massive storm of butterflies going on in her stomach.
It was their anniversary. Louis had already given her a present, waking her up with fresh scrambled eggs, (traded from a caravan), coffee and flowers. Along with other activities as-well. Like card games and cuddles. Louis was expecting something, but now it was night, he was a little disappointed but it didn't affect him much- as his present was just being with her in the first place.
But little did he know- she had a present. A scary one.
"Ok, we're gonna head out." Louis got up, helping Clementine up as-well. "Goodnight guys." AJ said, practicing his drawing skills. As Louis was heading to the dorms, Clementine stopped him, looking quite nervous. "You good?" Clementine smiled. "Yea, just follow me."
Clementine had led Louis to the music room, it was set up like back then, candles placed and lit, the atmosphere being romantic. "Could you play me that song? You know the one." Louis smiled sweetly, "Clementine." He responded with a nod. She sat down with him on the bench, the couple eyeing the carved heart on the piano.
He played the song, she rested her head on his shoulder. Somehow, the song calmed her nerves a lot. Soon the song was over, and he looked down to the sleepy girl, who gazed into his eyes. "Alright, I think it's time to sleep now."
Clementine got up and stood in-front of him, hands beginning to crawl behind her back and into her pocket. She grabbed Louis's knee, hoping it would help her lean down, it was still hard to do normal things with one leg. "What are you—doing?" Louis widened his eyes at Clementine on one knee, holding a velvet box in her hands. At that moment a war broke loose in his head. 'Was she proposing? No, no one would want to spend the rest of their life dedicated to you.' Was what he thought. Soon- his thoughts were altered.
She opened the box to show a gold ring.
"Louis- 5 years ago AJ and I were on the verge of starvation. He complained to me everyday, asking me when we were going to get a real home. I never could tell him that I didn't think we'd ever find one. I know how much we hurt you that day, with Marlon...I know how much you hated AJ and I but your humanity showed through for the people who came in and ruined your life." Louis sucked in his breath, blinking rapidly. "On this day, you accepted me to be yours. And you showed me, what it was meant to be loved truly, romantically. Something I never thought I'd be apart of. But it was always something I wanted to be apart of. So now, again on this day, I wanted to ask you...Louis. Louis will you be mine? Forever?" Clementine closed her eyes for a moment, opening them to a teared filled Louis, who nodded his head rapidly. Clementine got up immediately and hugged him, a rock rolling off her shoulder.
They sat there for a moment, kissing one another, and cuddling. He started to chuckle. "You know the guy is supposed to do that." Clementine laughed in response, "Who gives a shit were in the fucking apocalypse." He laughed with her. "True."
He picked her up by her thighs, her falling slightly, now gripping his shoulders as he spun her around happily. "Louis! Jesus!" She laughed. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He put her down, kissing her over and over. "I'm just so happy." Clementine grabbed his hands that were on her face, "Me to." They shared one more sweet kiss before leaving the music room, back to their dorm.
